Research in Practice
The research in a health and care context introduces students to the way in which research informs management practice establishing research as a core skill underpinning the MSc programme. Running through two teaching blocks, the module enables students to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills that underpin effective research.
This module provides opportunity to become a leader in your health and care project that will focus on the latest developments including organisational purpose, innovation, and change, transformation, prudent health and care, value-based health and care development and implementation.
The principles of conducting research within a Health & Care management context will be introduced along with the ability to reflect on practice in order to embed essential skills required for successful future careers.
The module culminates in a consultancy-based project/Dissertation that provides students with practical experience in applying a range of theories and models through working with a client organisation.

Value-Based Health and Care: Strategy Development
This module will be split into 5 parts:
- Principles of Value-Based Health and Care (VBHC): this will be a facilitated case-study discussion, with students analyzing and discussing the details behind the creation of a VBHC system.
- Translating VBHC into practice: This will build on the case study above to go into detail around how to successfully translate the theory of Value-Based Health and Care (VBHC) into practice, resulting in the creation of VBHC systems.
- The role of the Life Science Industry in a Value-Based Health and Care system: This module will focus on understanding the role of the life science industry in a Value-Based Health and Care (VBHC) system.
- Negotiation to achieve long term Value-Based partnerships: This will build on the above, simulating a negotiation between the life science industry and the health system, focused on the formation of a long-term value-based partnership.
- Adopting a strategy for delivering Value-Based Health and Care : Students will reflect on what they have learnt and synthesise new understandings specific to their current role and organization. Participants will be split into small groups to determine how they will evolve their respective VBHC strategies in their different contexts.

Value-Based Health and Care: Strategy Implementation
This module will be split into three sections.
Section 1: This will be delivered through Case-Based Learning. Five case studies will be used, drawn from examples across the NHS, Social Care and third Sector in Wales. Case studies will be discussed in detail according to a structured methodology enabling students to understand the approaches taken by different systems to successfully implement VBHC strategies. Specific topics will be covered by case studies. After each case-based discussion, there will be a 60-minute presentation building on the case study content to focus in on the key learning outcomes.
Section 2: This will focus on different leadership theories. Students will critically appraise the different theories and explore how these theories can be applied to support the creation of VBHC systems. VBHC represents a significant change in the way health and care systems operate and therefore, effective implementation requires strong leadership skills to bring colleagues on the journey.
Section 3: This will focus on culture change and present key theories and frameworks that can support the implementation of culture change programmes. Students will critically appraise these approaches and explore how they can be used to support the creation of VBHC systems. VBHC requires a significant change in culture and therefore, students need to understand how to effectively lead culture change.

Value-Based Health and Care Strategy Implementation: Approaches and Evaluation
Students will critically appraise the different theories and explore how these theories can be applied to support the creation of VBHC systems. The module is delivered through Case-Based Learning, with cases drawn from examples across the NHS in Wales and internationally. The module focuses on the technical knowledge around how to successfully implement a VBHC strategy, the infrastructure required to enable data capture and utilization and the approaches to building and managing a Value-Based contract for the purchase of products and services.
Case studies will be discussed in detail according to a structured methodology, enabling students to understand the approaches taken by different systems to successfully implement VBHC strategies. Students will be in the position of organisational leaders as they discuss with their peers approaches to responding to the challenges in the case studies. You will be encouraged to evaluate, critically analyse, think creatively, communicate clearly so that the case problem can be resolved and to understand how your solutions relate to the approaches that were actually taken in the real world. Specific topics will be covered by case studies.

Value-Based Health and Care Strategy Implementation: Leadership and People
VBHC represents a significant change in the way health and care systems operate and therefore, effective implementation requires strong leadership skills to bring colleagues on the journey. It also requires an understanding of how to change organisational culture and embed innovation.
Students will critically appraise the different leadership, culture change and innovation theories and explore how these can be applied to support the creation of VBHC systems. This will be delivered through a variety of approaches, including Case-Based Discussion, with cases drawn from examples across the NHS in Wales and more widely. Through the cases, we will explore challenges that health and care systems have faced and discuss with your peers how you would address the challenge from the position of an organisational leader. We will then explore how your solutions relate to what happened in practice and how the different approaches relate to established theories in leadership, culture change and innovation.
