MEng Medical Engineering

On our Medical Engineering course you will be taught a wide range of engineering skills and you will learn how to use them to study human physiology or design medical devices.

The degree leans on a variety of modules covering relevant electrical, chemical, mechanical, material and, of course, medical topics. As a medical engineer you will learn how to integrate these different skill sets to tackle the complex multi-disciplinary problems found in medical engineering.

Description

The objectives of the Medical Engineering programme are:

  • To provide students with a solid background in the design and analysis of civil engineering structures.
  • To build engineering skills of critical importance when working in industry, including the ability to break a complex engineering problem into its component parts, to sketch/model engineering solutions and to be able to understand and prepare technical reports.
  • To build awareness of current design practices through the use of the latest engineering standards (e.g. Eurocodes).
  • To nurture computer modelling skills by encouraging students to develop their own software with the final purpose of analysing realistic civil engineering problems.
  • To build critical awareness of the advantages and disadvantages of different design approaches when facing a civil engineering problem, including aspects such as environmental constraints, economy or health and safety.

Entry Requirements

The entry requirements for the MEng Medical Engineering degree are:

AAA - AAB at A level (including Mathematics).

Variable offers made dependent on subjects studied and all applications are considered on an individual basis, with GCSE grades, AS Level subjects and grades, work experience, references and personal statement taken into account.

Or 34 at IB to include a 5 at HL or 6 at SL Mathematics and 4 at HL or 5 at SL English Language.

Students studying for BTEC qualifications require D*D*D* to include B at A Level Mathematics. Must be in relevant subject. If they are not taking A Level Mathematics, they must achieve a minimum D in ‘Mathematics for Technicians’ and D in ‘Further Mathematics for Technicians’ modules of the BTEC. Students are also required to have minimum two A grades at GCSE, to include a minimum grade B in Mathematics and two other Science subjects.

Students with industrial experience and qualifications will be considered on a case-by-case basis. If you have studied access or vocational qualifications, you are advised to apply for the Integrated Foundation Year.

If you are applying for Level Two (second year) entry, in order to be considered, you will need to have already covered the topics offered in Swansea at Level One (first year) in a certified qualification, with a high overall score.

Tuition Fees

Annual tuition fees for entry in the academic year 2018/19 are as follows:

UK/EU International
MEng (Hons) Full-time £9,000 £17,950

Fees for full time Undergraduate UK/EU students may be increased in subsequent years of study by an inflationary amount determined by Welsh Government.

Fees for full time Undergraduate International students will increase by 3% for each subsequent year of study.

Additional Costs

The tuition fees for the MEng Medical Engineering course do not cover costs incurred personally by the student such as the purchase of books or stationery, printing or photocopying costs.

Recommended textbooks for this course are available in the library. All software needed for the course is available on the Engineering network, for use within our PC rooms at Swansea University.

Free wireless internet access is available across the whole of the University campus and halls of residence.

Accreditation

The MEng Medical Engineering at Swansea University is accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) on behalf of the Engineering Council for the purposes of fully meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer.

Accreditation is a mark of assurance that the degree meets the standards set by the Engineering Council in the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC). An accredited degree will provide you with some or all of the underpinning knowledge, understanding and skills as a Chartered Engineer. Some employers recruit preferentially from accredited degrees, and an accredited degree is likely to be recognised by other countries that are signatories to international accords.

Year Abroad

Students on a 5-year MEng degree scheme which includes a year abroad will also be able to study at a partner university after their second or third year, and before their final year. 

As a student on a Year Abroad course, you will select the university where you will spend your year abroad by submitting three choices to the course coordinator at the College of Engineering.

This information is then forwarded to the International Development Office at Swansea University so that exchange places can be allocated across the University.  There is a combination of Engineering specific and University-wide links available. University-wide links are subject to availability and negotiation as they service the entire institution, in principle.

The year abroad has to be passed in order to progress. Our study abroad schemes are not credit bearing in the sense that they do not act as substitutes for study in Swansea; so a standard 4-year MEng becomes a 5-year MEng with a year abroad.
