Study Abroad
Year Abroad - If your degree scheme at Swansea includes an intercalary year abroad (four year degree scheme), you will be able to study at a partner institution in the third year.
Semester Abroad - Some degree schemes allow you to participate in a semester abroad in your second year as part of a three year degree scheme.

Swansea University has a variety of different opportunities to gain international work experience: Erasmus work placements, British Council Language Assistant placements, internships with multi-national and small businesses in India, Law, Media & Museum internships in the USA and short- term internships through MBA programmes.

Why Go Abroad?
There are innumerable benefits to studying and working abroad, many of which will enhance your CV.
A recent survey by i-Graduate, an independent research organisation, showed ‘around 60% of the country’s top employers indicate that experience of international study enhances employability’.
Selling Your Experience
It is essential that you market your study or work abroad experience successfully to potential employers.

Assessment & Credit
Students spending a semester abroad will enrol on a Swansea module (or combination of modules) worth 60 Swansea Univesity credits. Students spending a full academic year abroad will enrol on a Swansea module worth 120 Swansea University credits.

The number of credits that a student is required to study abroad will be defined in the learning contract completed before departure. Details of the exact modules studies will be recorded on a learning agreement and approved by the academic coordinator at Swansea, changes to the learning agreement can be made (if approved by the academic coordinator) within 4 weeks of the study placement beginning.
Students will be awarded academic credit by their host University. The academic transcript provided by the host institution will be used to convert the credits gained into Swansea marks using the Swansea University grade conversion table.
The ECTS system is used to convert marks attained at European institutions 5 ECTS are equivalent to 10 Swansea University credits.
For Universities outside Europe, students will be informed of the credit system at their host and the required credit load. Students will need to take the minimum number of credits to maintain full time status.
For work placements abroad a training contract will be completed prior to departure, this will detail what the student is required to do in order to satisfactorily pass the work placement module. Full details of the activiites to be carried on during the placement will be recorded in the training agreement.

Learn a Language
We offer several different ways to learn a language at Swansea University. You can study French through a degree, Arabic through our Students Union, or Mandarin in your spare time. These can be the stepping stone to your experience abroad.
Visiting and Exchange students
We accept students from partner institutions to study with us too. We have partnership agreements throughout the world. Please go to our Visiting and Exchange pages.
