Course Overview

BSc Economics is our Department of Economics' flagship degree. Blending economic theory with mathematical and statistical elements, this programme equips you with the analytical tools, knowledge and techniques to gain a solid understanding of modern economic principles and contemporary issues. With real-world relevance, our BSc Economics is ideal for students thinking about becoming a skilled economist, undertaking postgraduate studies, or pursuing a career in a broad range of economic and financial areas of industry.

Our 4-year course offers the opportunity to study abroad for a year in one of our international partner institutions. You will develop your communication skills, enhance your cultural awareness and can even gain proficiency in a foreign language prior to graduation. You are able to transfer onto a study abroad or placement variant of your undergraduate degree throughout your first year of study.

Description

All our undergraduate Economics degrees combine a range of compulsory modules that students must study in their first year. Later years then allow significant freedom to pick optional modules, giving you the opportunity to hone in on your developing interests and specialisation.

Entry Requirements

A-level Qualification

Offers for programmes in the School of Management are usually within the range of  ‘ABB-BBB’ or equivalent.

All applications are considered on an individual basis, with GCSE grades, AS Level subjects and grades, work experience, references and personal statement taken into account.

Variable offers are made dependent on subjects studied.

No A-level in Business, Economics, Maths or Accounting/Finance is required. We do not consider General Studies as an A-level subject for offer purposes. Students may combine A-levels with other qualifications below.

GCSE Maths and English minimum C grade is also required.

International Baccalaureate 

The School of Management will make offers to students with predicted (or achieved) IB of 32-33 or higher.

BTEC (18-unit)

The School of Management will make offers to students with predicted (or achieved) BTEC results of DDM or better.

English Language

Non-native English speakers must achieve 6.0 overall with no component less than 5.5 in IELTS or equivalent tests.

Tuition Fees

Annual tuition fees for entry in the academic year 2018/19 are as follows:

UK/EU International
BSc (Hons) Full-time £9,000 £15,000

Fees for full time Undergraduate UK/EU students may be increased in subsequent years of study by an inflationary amount determined by Welsh Government.

Fees for full time Undergraduate International students will increase by 3% for each subsequent year of study.

Additional Costs

Recommended textbooks for this course are available in the library. All software needed for the course is available on the School of Management network, for use within our PC rooms at Swansea University.

Free wireless internet access is available across the whole of the University campus and halls of residence.

Fees for Study Abroad

While on study abroad, students pay 20% of the regular fee (for a total year abroad,  this equates to £1800 for home/EU students or £2700 for overseas students). 

The total programme cost for a four year programme at the current time is therefore: 

  • Home/EU students: £28800
  • International students: £43200

Please note fees are subject to change/inflation year-on-year. Fees for international exchange programmes may vary from the above.

Scholarships

Swansea University offers a range of scholarships to help fund your studies, including: 

Excellence Scholarship - awarded to students achieving AAA or above at A-Level (or equivalent) - £3000 over 2 years. 

Merit Scholarship - awarded to students achieving AAB at A-Level (or equivalent - £2000 over 2 years.

Developing Futures Scholarship - The School of Management also offers the Developing Futures Scholarship package, which encourages students to develop a number of professional skills whilst working with the School throughout the academic year.

  • Undergraduate scholarship of £2000 towards tuition fees. Available to non-EU (International) students holding an offer to study at the School of Management. 
  • Postgraduate scholarship of £3000 towards tuition fees. Available to all UK/EU and International students holding an offer to study at the School of Management.

Location and Facilities

The Bay Campus is situated in an outstanding location on the eastern approach into Swansea, with direct access onto the beach and its own seafront promenade. The campus features modern and bright student accommodation, including standard, premium, twin and wheelchair accessible rooms.
