This module provides an understanding of ethics and values applied to social work practice. Particular reference will be made to the social processes that lead to social exclusion in Wales and their impact on day-to-day life and service provision. It will also address the values and provision of social work services with particular reference to the concepts of stigma, empowerment, equalities and anti-oppressive practices and legislation. The historical evolution, philosophy and application of social work ethics, values and the Care Council for Wales Code of Practice for social care workers will be considered in relation to practice application with different groups. Emphasis will be placed on the development of the reflective and ethical practitioner.
Mae'r modiwl yma¿n darparu dealltwriaeth o foeseg a gwerthoedd sy'n berthnasol i arfer gwaith cymdeithasol. Bydd cyfeiriad penodol yn cael ei wneud i'r prosesau cymdeithasol sy'n arwain at waharddiad cymdeithasol yng Nghymru a'u heffaith ar fywyd o ddydd i ddydd a darparu gwasanaethau. Bydd hefyd yn mynd i'r afael â gwerthoedd a darpariaeth gwasanaethau gwaith cymdeithasol gan gyfeirio'n arbennig at y cysyniadau stigma, grymuso, cydraddoldebau ac arferion gwrth-ormesol a deddfwriaeth. This module will provide students with an introduction to the gathering and use of information in social care services and will provide an introduction to qualitative and quantitative research approaches in social work. This module will provide an introduction to quantitative and qualitative research and evaluation methodologies used to gather and assess knowledge in and for social care services. It will address the different sources, methods and purposes of information gathering. The module will also consider the application and implications of modern information communication technologies to the practice, planning and management of social work.
The module examines key issues in research on social work and social care by presenting a series of case studies illustrating various research methods applied in these areas.
The central premise of this module is to prepare students for the 30 day placement and to enable them to fulfill the requirements of Social Care Wales by undertaking a placement in a partnering local authority. This module is a supervised period of 30 days in at least one practice setting in which students must meet the following National Occupational Standards (CCW, 2011). Key Role 1-NOS 1 Performance indicator 1- Establish your own strategy for maintaining an up to date knowledge and evidence base for social work practice; NOS 2: Develop social work practice through supervision and reflection; P1 Seek professional supervision to develop accountable social work practice;P2 Prepare for formal professional supervision in ways that will maximise its effectiveness;P4 Use feedback from supervision and other sources to inform reflection on and evaluation of your social work practice;P5 Reflect on the cultural context in which you practice and how this impacts upon your work;P6 Reflect on your own values, beliefs and assumptions and how they impact on your social work practice;P7 Integrate learning within practice Key Role 2: Practise Professional Social Work- P1 Work within the context of your own organisation; P2 Establish the parameters of your own work role and how the responsibilities of others link with these; P3 Ensure your understanding of processes in which you may be involved; NOS 5: Manage ethical issues, dilemmas and conflicts; P1 Recognise ethical issues, dilemmas and conflicts that arise in the course of social work practice; P2 Review sources of information and knowledge that can inform professional judgements about ethical issues, dilemmas and conflicts; P3 Reflect on how your own values and experiences may impact on managing ethical issues, dilemmas and conflicts. Key Role 3: Promote engagement and participation- NOS 9: Engage people in social work practice; P1 Plan how to use communication to secure initial engagement; P2 Use communication skills to establish the social work relationship; P3 Support people to find effective ways to communicate their views, needs and preferences. Following the placement the student must have demonstrated that they have the basic interpersonal skills and values that are required for them to be considered suitable and safe to work directly with citizens in need of care and support, and carers; and that they have acquired an understanding, directly from citizens in need of care and support, of the impact of social work practice on them. The module also aims to prepare the students for the academic work which they complete on placement, which is a reflective commentary. Students will also develop a better understanding of their learning needs before going out on placement and have a clear understanding of what the expectations are. They will also have opportunity to work through ways of dealing with any problems or difficulties which may arise.

This module promotes and encourages the development of `research mindedness¿ in social work. It explores the theory and practice of social work research by way of examination of the concept and utility of evidence based practice, ontological and epistemological approaches to knowledge, case study examples of research designs, research paradigms of quantitative, qualitative and mixed method approaches, and reflection on ethics and values in social work research. The module also entails a practical element requiring students to undertake tasks in exploring statistical datasets, and using ICT. The module also prepares students for the task of completing an empirical or desk based dissertation in the second year of the Masters Programme.
This module encourages the development of research mindedness and prepares students for evidence informed practice by way of a self-directed dissertation study into an area of social work interest.
