About

Professor Rich Fry is Professor of Environment and Health based at Population Data Science in Swansea University Medical School. Rich is a Geographer by training with a BSc (Hons) in Physical Geography and an MSc and PhD in Geographic Information Science.

After completing his doctoral studies, Rich secured a post-doctoral position at the Wales Institute for Socio-Economic Research, Data and Methods (WISERD) focusing on spatial data linkages and accessibility modelling. He returned to Swansea University in 2012, joining the Medical School as a Senior Research Officer with a focus on environmental modelling and privacy-protecting address-level data linkages.

As the lead of the Environment and Health Research Centre (ENVHE), Rich oversees the use and development of advanced analytical techniques aimed at understanding the social and environmental factors influencing health and wellbeing. The ENVHE team, comprising geographers, epidemiologists, statisticians, and data scientists and PhD students, leads novel research using linked environmental, routine health and social care data using linked data to generate policy-relevant insights. Rich has secured funding from The Wellcome Trust, MRC, ESRC, HDR UK, HCRW and NIHR to support these activities and the ENVHE team.

In addition, Rich holds several other roles. He is the Co-Director of HDR Wales, the Associate Director of the HDRUK Social and Environmental Determinants of Health Driver Programme, and the Principal Investigator on the Wellcome Trust-funded MAGENTA project, which examines the impacts of climate change on maternal health. Rich is also academic lead for Administrative Data Research (ADR) Wales in the areas of Health and Wellbeing, Climate Change and Social Justice.

Rich also contributes his expertise to various scientific advisory panels, including the Welsh Index of Multiple Deprivation, Housing Spine Analytical Resource, Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE) Social Care Working Group, and the Administrative Data Research Agricultural Research Collection. Human and Life Sciences at Swansea University. Rich sits on funding panels for several UK funders including ESRC, The Wellcome Trust and Medical Research Foundation.

Additionally, he serves as the Postgraduate Admissions Tutor for the Faculty of Medicine and teaches on Masters degrees in Geographic Information Science and Health Data Science.

Rich teaches on undergraduate and postgraduate courses with a focus on spatial data science, health data science, spatial statistics and health data visualisation. The focus of his teaching activities and postgraduate supervision is how we can use geography to help improve people lives. Rich is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
