Swansea has been named the safest city for students in Wales, according to a study by the trusted and independent Complete University Guide (CUG).
The CUG has released its latest Crime Safety tables, delving into publicly available data to help students and parents feel prepared for their big move in the quest for higher education.
Each town or city with two or more universities had three categories of crime measured – domestic burglary, robbery of personal property and violence against the person with injury – resulting in a total score and ranking.
The results showed a positive picture for Swansea, ranking 6th, making it the safest place in Wales and top 10 for cities in England and Wales.
Those heading to Swansea for university can have a great mix of that city experience while being reassured that their safety is being looked after.
Swansea University’s Professor Judith Lamie, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (International), said: “At Swansea University, we understand that a safe community is fundamental to a thriving academic environment.
“Parents and carers rightly worry about how safe their children will be when they go off to university, and this is something we don’t take lightly.
“Our city offers a secure and welcoming experience for students, no matter their background, and it’s fantastic to see it highlighted officially through this study.”
Professor Amanda Chetwynd, Chair of the Complete University Guide Advisory Board, said: “The Complete University Guide is the trusted and independent gold standard for university rankings in the UK, and has helped countless students choose the university and the subjects that are right for them.
“While invaluable, the league tables only tell part of the story. Our safety rankings provide an additional layer of information to help students make the right choices.”
Simon Emmett, Chief Executive Officer of IDP Connect, added: “The Complete University Guide’s mission has always been about helping students make the right decisions about their future.
“The publication of the areas where students are safest builds on this work and gives additional information to help students and their families make the right choices for them when choosing a university.”
