Kind-hearted staff at Swansea University’s College of Human and Health Sciences have raised over £900 for a local charity, The Freya Bevan Fund.
Staff from the College donned their sunglasses, Hawaiian shirts and grass skirts to attend a Hawaiian Beach party and quiz, organised by Mrs Shelly Hill and her colleagues in the College’s Academic Services department.
To complement the fundraising, the team also held a cake sale and arranged a raffle. Over 35 raffle prizes were sourced from local businesses including hotel and guest house stays, theatre tickets, attraction passes, shopping vouchers and spa treatments.
Freya Bevan, from Neath, was just 19 months old when diagnosed with a PNET brain tumour in May 2014. Her treatment to date has included two major brain surgeries (one of which lasted over seven hours), five rounds of intense chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant.
And two-year-old Freya returned to her family home in May, after 10 weeks of proton beam therapy cancer treatment in Oklahoma, USA.
The event’s organiser Shelly Hill said: “The Freya Bevan Fund was chosen as Freya is a local child who needed funds for treatment in the USA. We were hoping to raise about £500, so we were thrilled when the total reached £910. The College’s Placements team put in so much effort to help raise the money and we all really enjoyed doing it!
“Colleagues in the College were really supportive and were very generous when contributing to the raffle and other fund raising activities. There was a fantastic atmosphere at the Hawaiian night with everyone joining in and really getting into the spirit of the evening, the limbo dancing being a particular highlight!
“We are proud to have been able to contribute to the Fund in this way and we wish Freya and her family all the very best as she continues with her treatment.
“Hopefully we will be able to make this an annual event in the College, as raising money for local charities through joining with our colleagues at such a fun event really did create a ‘buzz’ for all involved!”
A representative for The Freya Bevan Fund said: “Thank you everyone who took part in the fund raising event at Swansea University for The Freya Bevan Fund, we are so grateful for your contribution of £910.”
