Professor Hassan MBE FREng PhD DSc FICE CEng FLSW research interest is in computational methods for the solution of problems in engineering analysis and design. His main research areas are:

Unstructured Mesh Generation
Computational Fluid Dynamics
Computational Electromagnetics
Parallel Processing
Professor Oubay Hassan and Professor Ken Morgan, in close partnership with BAE Systems, and Airbus have led the development of the FLITE system that enable the modelling of problems in computational fluid mechanics an computational electromagnetic.

An excellent example, which received significant worldwide publicity, was the use of the developed FLITE system to support the aerodynamic design of THRUST SSC, the car which took the World Land Speed Record beyond the speed of sound in 1997.

Building on his previous success, he has led the team that has developed the CFD technologies that deemed required to ensure a successful aerodynamic design of the new BLOODHOUND Land Speed Record project. The main aim of this project is to use the BLOODHOUND SSC as the platform for provision of high-quality public engagement activities that motivate the next generation to deal with global 21st century challenges.

Teaching

  • EG-201 Fluid Mechanics II

    This module aims to create an interest in fluid flow, to show that flow phenomena are amenable to analysis, to show the relevance of fluid mechanics to Civil Engineering and to create confidence and ability in problem-solving in fluid mechanics.

  • EG-221 Structural Mechanics IIa

    This module primarily concerns the analysis of statically indeterminate structures. After a review of statics and stress resultants, energy methods of analysis are introduced leading to the calculations of deflection and deformation for truss and frame structures.

  • EGA116 Civil Engineering Structural Analysis Practice

    This module primarily concerns the analysis of statically determinate structures. The module build on the Mechanics and Strength of Material modules taught in semester one and two of year one. Resolving forces in civil engineering determinant truss like structures, the stretching on bending moment and shear force diagrams for determinant continuous beams and frames are the focus of this module.
