On Friday 6 November, Swansea University won the gold award in the Education and Training category at this year’s Canmol: Wales Marketing Awards, organised by the Chartered Institute of Public Relations.
The University won the award for its Where Bright Futures Begin: Undergraduate Open Day, which was held in June this year.
Canmol is Welsh for praise, and the awards are an opportunity to do just that: praise individuals, companies and teams who have demonstrated marketing excellence.
The main objective of the open day was to attract bookings from a target of 10% more prospective students than the previous year. The campaign involved conducting competitor research and analysing feedback from previous events in order to tailor the plan for the June open day. Due to the opening of the new £450 million Bay Campus opening in September 2015, the open day marked a celebration for Swansea University as the final event on one campus, as well as an opportunity to celebrate the University’s recent success in university rankings and surveys. The event also marked the end of the three-year undergraduate recruitment campaign, Making Waves, which won the Canmol Educating and Training Award in 2013.
The innovative festival-themed event led to the target of a 10% increase in bookings being met, with 91% of visitors rating the day as “excellent or good”, and 77% noting that they were more likely to apply to Swansea University after attending the open day.
Barrie Clark (pictured), Swansea University’s UK Student Recruitment Manager, said: “Winning a Canmol: Wales Marketing Award is a fantastic achievement for the University, and a sheer testament to the determination and hard work of those involved.
“We decided to go that extra mile to deliver a truly entertaining marketing strategy. The University’s own student recruitment team came up with the ideas for the open day and were such a key part in the preparation and delivery of the event, so it’s great that they can be commended in this way.”
The 2016 Undergraduate open days will be held on: Saturday 11 June, Saturday 15 October, and Saturday 29 October.
