Stuff Matters: Vivian lecture 13 May

Swansea University and the South Wales Materials Associations (SWMA) will host the Vivian Lecture, on Wednesday 13th May, starting with a buffet and drinks at 6pm at the Faraday Lecture Theatre, Swansea University.

This year's Vivian speaker is Professor Mark Miodownik from University College London, who will be presenting Stuff Matters.

The lecture will also include a brief introduction to the Engineering Manufacturing Centre, and an overview of the Engineering quarter at the new Science and Innovation Bay Campus, opening September 2015.

Mark MiodownikProfessor Miodownik (pictured) is a British materials engineer, broadcaster and writer at University College London. Previously, he was the head of the Materials Research Group at King's College London, and a co-founder of Materials Library.

Prof Miodownik writes for The Guardian and The Times, and he is a regular presenter of engineering TV programmes on the BBC. In 2013 he was awarded the Rooke Medal by the Royal Academy of Engineering.

His book Stuff Matters: The Strange Stories of the Marvellous Materials that Shape Our Man-Made World, won the 2014 Royal Society Winton Prize for Science Books.

The Engineering Manufacturing Centre (EMC), will be based in the Engineering quarter of the new Science and Innovation Campus, and along with the Innovation Hub, has been part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund through the Welsh Government.
