A second year student nurse from Swansea University’s College of Human and Health Sciences is aiming for success at an international airgun competition in the Netherlands.
Hannah Scott, who is from Fishguard and studies at the College’s St David’s Park Campus in Carmarthen, has been selected to represent Wales at the annual InterShoot competition, which takes place in The Hague from 5th to 7th February.
Hannah said: “I started shooting when I was around 10 when I started doing a sport called tetrathlon which involves shooting, swimming, running and horse riding (a mini version of modern pentathlon). From taking part in this, I got asked if I wanted to take up shooting to a higher level. I trained and competed for both Wales and GBR junior squads until the age of 16 when I suffered a shoulder injury and was forced to take a break for an operation and physiotherapy treatment, which shattered my dream of making the commonwealth games!
“I only took the sport back up around 12 months ago when I got asked to start coaching the Pembrokeshire tetrathlon team, I bumped into my old coach at one of the competitions and he invited me to a training day and it all started again from there!
“The competition I will be going to is called InterShoot, in the Netherlands. We will be competing from teams all over the world. I am nervous about competing for my country but I do have the advantage that I have had experience of competing for Wales before. No doubt my heart will be pounding when each match starts. I just have to make sure I focus and calm my nerves to keep a steady hand!”
Senior Lecturer with the College of Human and Health Sciences, Heulwen Morgan-Samuel said: “Hannah is a clear example of how diverse our nursing students are. We as a College are proud that we are able to support Hannah in continuing and being successful with the sport whilst studying. Hannah is a popular student both with her peers and staff alike. She is tenacious in achieving her best both in academia and hobbies. We wish her well in Holland and I am sure we will hear more of Hannah’s success in years to come.”
