In the autumn, Charlotte Eve Davies, Amanda Smith, PhD Biological Sciences students, and Tara Thrupp, an MSc by Research student, got the chance to attend the Marine Biological Association’s ‘Oceans of Potential’ Conference in Plymouth.
Charlotte said “It was a great way for us to develop our communication and presentation skills as we all had posters on display. The conference also hosted an evening debate, open to the public , and chaired by celebrity guest Monty Halls (of ‘The Fisherman’s Apprentice fame), which had an amazing turn out – including local fishermen. One of the key points raised was something that I have worked on during my PhD – working with fishermen in research rather than against them, as seems to be the ‘trend’ at the moment.
Being a member of an association such as the MBA is great for events such as this, where you are able to meet other researchers from all over the world, swap ideas, and gain knowledge. I can’t wait for my next conference – and won’t have to wait for long; this month I was lucky enough to win an MBA Travel Bursary to attend the 10th Marine Biological Association Postgraduate Conference at Aberystwyth University in May – will keep you updated in the next newsletter!”
