Course Overview

On our TESOL and English Literature degree with a year abroad, you will be able to gain the knowledge and skills to teach English as a second language, as well as exploring aspects of English literature from gothic fiction to creative writing.

Teaching English is a great way to see the world and this degree will provide practical and transferable skills to open up a range of exciting career opportunities.

During your four-year degree you’ll learn about theory and practice, language teaching methodology, vocabulary, grammar and meaning, psycholinguistics, first and second language acquisition and discourse analysis.

You will spend your third year studying in Europe or the USA – an exciting and rewarding experience,  which will further enhance your career prospects.

In your second year, you have the option of taking the internationally recognised Cambridge Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA), a professional qualification for teachers of English as a foreign language.

You will also be able to develop programming skills through computer-assisted language learning materials and receive training in research methods including reporting and analysis of data.

Your TESOL and English Literature experience

We offer varied and flexible course content, so you can shape your degree to your own interests.

You will be able to explore the theory and practice of teaching English as a second language, language teaching methodology, vocabulary, grammar and meaning, psycholinguistics, first and second language acquisition and discourse analysis.

You can choose English Literature modules covering gothic and genre fiction, gender and culture, renaissance literature, national and global literatures, modernity and contemporary writing, nineteenth century literature, creative writing and professional writing.

Throughout your degree you will have an academic mentor who will provide you with pastoral and academic support.You will spend the third year of your four-year course studying abroad, either in Europe or the USA, further enhancing your student experience and career prospects.

TESOL and English Literature with a Year Abroad Employment Opportunities

Entry Requirements

Our standard entry requirement is BBB (UCAS tariff points 120) or equivalent. All offers are made following a review of the application form, predicted/achieved grades and subjects, the reference and personal statement. We also accept a range of advanced level qualifications including: International Baccalaureate 32; Welsh Baccalaureate - grade equivalent to A-level; Access to Higher Education and Open University qualifications, and Extended Project.

Here are the requirements for International students.

For applicants whose first language is not English, we require a minimum IELTS score of 6.0.

How You're Taught

In the first year of study, you will be taught through lectures and tutorials. Assessment will be coursework, essay and examination.

In the second year, you will learn through seminars and group-work. Assessment will be varied including coursework, essays, group presentations and examination.

In the final year, you will undertake independent study through research methods, a dissertation or practice portfolio and also be taught through seminars and group-work. Assessment includes independent research dissertation, independent presentation, coursework and examination.

Our learning and teaching enhances your key skills that employers look for in graduates as follows:

  • Self-Management (attending classes, meeting deadlines, preparing for seminars, dissertation)
  • Teamworking (group presentations, group seminars, study trips and projects)
  • Customer awareness (study abroad, internships, work placements, student experience)

There are opportunities for Welsh speakers to study some elements of this course through the medium of Welsh but there is not yet enough provision to reach 40 credits in each year.

Continuing to study through the medium of Welsh once you leave school or college is a natural step for you and a way of ensuring your chances of getting the best education. The smaller class sizes will provide you with a great opportunity for support. It will also be a valuable addition to your CV and career development. Opportunities are available for students who are fluent and confident in the language as well as for those who are less confident or who are learners. It is also possible to choose Welsh-medium seminar and tutorial classes for modules taught primarily through the medium of English.

Additional Costs

Access to your own digital device/the appropriate IT kit will be essential during your time studying at Swansea University. Study Abroad and Global Opportunities

To learn more about study abroad, visit our Go Global webpages. Enrolment on a programme with a semester/year abroad does not guarantee you a semester/year abroad placement. Spaces are limited and subject to a competitive selection process. In the event you do not secure a semester/year abroad placement, you will be transferred to the standard variant of your degree scheme without a semester or year abroad.

All of our students have the option of study abroad. Our 4-year programmes offer a full-year abroad and we also offer a semester abroad for 3-year degrees, during your second year from January to May in Hong Kong, Singapore and the USA.
