Course Overview

If you are interested in analysing a range of literary texts from various contexts and historical periods alongside exploring the complex relationships between literature, politics and history and develop your knowledge of a world language and you would like to spend a year abroad then this is the degree for you.

Why English Literature and Italian at Swansea?

Set in parkland overlooking Swansea Bay on the edge of the breathtaking Gower Peninsula, the University's location is captivating. English Literature at Swansea is ranked 2nd in the UK for graduate prospects (The Guardian University Guide 2016).

Our staff are experienced writers whose work has been widely published, broadcast and performed, internationally-recognised academic staff and research experts who specialise in history, film, gender studies, literature, theatre studies and translation.

Swansea is the birthplace of Dylan Thomas, widely regarded by many literary scholars as one of the Twentieth Century's most influential lyrical poets, and amongst the finest as such of all time.

You also have the opportunity to study in Italy.

 

Your English Literature and Italian Experience

Our English Literature and Italian degree programme offers you the opportunity to:

  • Combine intensive language tuition with optional modules relating to a wide variety of aspects of society and culture in the Italian-speaking world.
  • Spend your third year in Italy. You can study at a University, teach in a school or work in a business during your year abroad in Italy.
  • Cover literature themes from the early-Medieval period to the present day, while also developing your knowledge of critical theory and the diversity of approaches to literature.
  • Study optional modules in Gender and Culture with specialist researchers and lecturers.
  • Study optional modules in Creative Writing.

English Literature and Italian Employment Opportunities

97% of our graduates are employed within six months of graduating according to the latest DLHE 2015 figures. Our Employability Officer supports our students with information and advice which is backed up by the University’s Careers Service and Work Placement Team. All students have access to events, workshops and employer talks, including an annual conference for students in June to support final year students with the transition into the world of work.

Entry Requirements

Our standard entry requirement is BBB (UCAS tariff points 120) or equivalent. All offers are made following a review of the application form, predicted/achieved grades and subjects, the reference and personal statement. We also accept a range of advanced level qualifications including: International Baccalaureate 32; Welsh Baccalaureate - grade equivalent to A-level; Access to Higher Education and Open University qualifications, and Extended Project.

Here are the requirements for International students.

For applicants whose first language is not English, we require a minimum IELTS score of 6.0.

How You're Taught

This degree programme is delivered through lectures, tutorials and seminars. You will usually receive nine hours minimum scheduled contact time with your teachers every week. Full attendance at lectures, seminars and personal tutorials (personal tutorials are obligatory). All Arts and Humanities degree programmes include independent learning which requires initiative and hard work.
We will challenge you with demanding teaching and assessment. Assessment includes essay, coursework and examination, presentations and a dissertation.

This course offers some modules taught through the medium of Welsh or bilingually for students who consider themselves to be fluent Welsh speakers. For more details on the provision available see the Welsh Provision expander below.

Welsh Provision

There are opportunities for Welsh speakers to study this subject through the medium of Welsh and our dedicated academy, Academi Hywel Teifi, is here to support you throughout your time at Swansea University. We offer you:

  • An interview through the medium of Welsh when applying for a place.
  • The option to receive your personal correspondence in Welsh, English or bilingually - we will then communicate with you in your language of choice.
  • Access to generous Welsh-language study scholarships or bursaries.
  • Access to modules taught wholly or partly in Welsh.
  • The option to write and submit your coursework or exams through the medium of Welsh (even if you have chosen to study in English), and your work will be marked in Welsh.
  • A Welsh-speaking academic tutor.
  • One-to-one support to improve your academic Welsh language skills.
  • An opportunity to gain an additional free qualification that serves as evidence of your Welsh language ability for future employers.

Since 2011, there has been a 40% increase in the number of students studying through the medium of Welsh at Swansea University and our *TEF data over the last two years shows that Welsh-medium students are high achievers in regards to employability (*Swansea University TEF return 2017 and 2018).

Tuition Fees

Annual tuition fees for entry in the academic year 2019/20 are as follows:

UK/EU International
BA (Hons) Full Time £ 9,000 £ 14,500

Fees for full time Undergraduate UK/EU students may be increased in subsequent years of study by an inflationary amount determined by Welsh Government.

Fees for full time Undergraduate International students will increase by 3% for each subsequent year of study.

Global Opportunities

Your degree programme may already give you an option to study or work abroad but in addition to this you can also consider an international summer programme.

These programmes are open to all our undergraduate students and include culture and study tours, volunteering programmes and internships across destinations such as China, Zambia, South Korea, Japan, Europe and Canada.
