Mrs Jill Burgess started her career in 1972 entering the Travel and Tourism Industry gaining professional entry into the Institute of Travel and Tourism.  In 1991, she was employed by American Express Europe Ltd as area manager and, following their withdrawal from the area due to the worldwide recession at that time, she negotiated to acquire the goodwill of the business together with the retention of staff and started her own business Burgess World Travel.  Three years later, she was awarded Welsh Business Woman of the Year and was invited by American Express to sit on the World Wide Advisory Board in New York to represent the UK, a position which she held for ten years.  Mrs Burgess has now retired from the business.

Mrs Burgess is Chair of the Standards Committee for the City & County of Swansea and Super Lay member of the South West Wales Research Ethics Committee. She is a member of the Board for the Wales National Pool, Swansea. Mrs Burgess is also a key business adviser within the Regional Learning and Skills Partnership. She is Vice-Chair of the Gower Society and on the Committee for the Royal Institute of South Wales.

Mrs Burgess is a Court appointed lay member of Swansea University Council and a member of Court.
