A celebration was held on 17th October to mark the move for the team and students to their brand new facilities at The College, Swansea University.
It was also an opportunity to thank the many individuals from Navitas, Swansea University and a variety of external partners who made the joint venture possible. The team in Swansea were delighted that so many colleagues from across UPE were able to join them on the day.
The team in Swansea wave to celebrate their move to the new building
With a brand new building and halls of residence (the latter due for completion very early next year), The College offers a number of new facilities for the campus as a whole.
The new academic building, with amazing beach views (above), has been designed to deliberately incorporate spaces for socialising, informal study and events – it is intended for use by all students and staff of the University, not just The College.
The aim is to provide a 'sticky space', where students come to attend their lectures but also to have a chat, to follow up on learning with individual or group study, to attend events or just to hang out.
This makes for a better all-round experience, engaging students in the learning community, rather than simply listening and leaving. The team are delighted that this is already happening, with these student spaces being seriously well utilised, every day, by not only students of The College, but also by students of other Swansea University academic colleges as well as numerous staff from across the Bay campus.
So, in addition to providing 18 new teaching spaces, The College building offers:
- A 60-seat computer lab, available for independent study outside of teaching hours
- A 40-seat study room, known as a 'Base'
- An informal space in the atrium with 32 study spaces, plus sofas
- A coffee shop and seating area for 42 on the seafront
- A multi-function room at the front of the building for events such as films, speakers, fairs and social activities.
College Principal/Director Sharon Davies-Smith shares a few words
A formal opening and launch event will be held in spring 2019 when both buildings of the College have been completed.
