BAFTX Scholarships

The British American Foundation of Texas (BAFTX) was established to help provide financial assistance and educational opportunities to academically-gifted students in the United Kingdom and the United States.

It offers a number of dedicated scholarship programmes to Swansea University students participating in the University's reciprocal exchange programmes with Texas A&M University and the University of Houston.

Scholarship Eligibility and Value

  • Students going to Texas A&M University (3 scholarships available): $5,300
  • Students going to University of Houston (1 scholarship available): $5,052

Scholarships are only open to students studying Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths or Business programmes.

In order to be eligible, students will need to demonstrate: 

  • Academic Excellence and
  • Financial Hardship

How to Apply for a BAFTX Scholarship

How to Apply - Required Information

Students wishing to apply for a BAFTX Scholarship will need to complete the online application relevant to their chosen Texas university (see links above).

In advance of completing their application, students should gather the following supporting information:

  • Average mark for the year (or semester if you have only completed one semester at Swansea)
  • The income and occupation of each parent and the Gross Income of the household in which they normally live
  • Reference from Academic Mentor on Swansea University headed paper
  • Academic Transcript signed by Academic Mentor or academic member of staff (transcript will be provided by Go Global)
  • Passport style picture to upload electronically

How to Apply - Supporting Materials

In order to complete their application, students will also need to prepare and upload: 

  • A budget outline for costs whilst studying in Texas (download  BAFTX Scholarship Budget Outline Guidance Notes )
  • Resume / CV
  • Details of any voluntary / community work
  • Details of extracurricular activities undertaken
  • An essay of no less than 1,000 words on one of the following topics:
    • Explain a situation in which you were directly involved that did not go according to plan and, as a result, how you responded to the new situation.
    • Describe an ethical dilemma you experienced firsthand. How did you manage and resolve the situation?
    • Describe a situation where, due to your background, beliefs, or life experiences, you felt at odds in an environment. How did you react to and overcome the differences?
