Education for Sustainable Development and Global Citizenship

At Swansea University, we’re committed to embedding sustainability within our teaching, as outlined in our Strategic Plan 2020.

We are a key partner in the Higher Education for Future Generations Group for Wales (previously known as the HE ESDGC Group for Wales).

Through the group, we focus on sharing good practice around Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and sustainability and we recently took over the running of the UN Regional Centre for Excellence (RCE) Wales.

We have also developed a number of related groups:

  • Circular Economy Research and Innovation Group (chaired by Gavin Bunting, Swansea University)
  • Learning and Teaching for ESDGC, Healthy Universities
  • Collaborating with Public Services Boards
  • Regeneration and cohesive communities, Effective communication
  • Asking the hard questions (a scrutiny group)

 

Our Involvement in Education for Sustainable Development:

We carry out a wide range of activity in relation to our involvement in Education for Sustainable Development:

  • We provided dedicated Staff: Our ESDGC Lead Officer ESDGC Lead Officer is responsible for reviewing the progress of ESDGC at the University.
  • We are a member and signatory of the Principles of Responsible Management Education (PRME) which aims to integrate aspects of ESDGC and Corporate Social Responsilbility across curricula.
  • We hold a range of ESDGC workshops for all our staff and students to encourage participation, dialogue and upskilling. These include:
    - Sustainability: its role in your learning and employability.
    - Sustainability and Wellbeing across the curriculum.

We also support a wide range of research relating to the teaching and practice of ESDGC Recent findings include:

We Support Practical Projects

We support a large number of practical projects that use University operations as a learning tool for students on different courses.

In 2017/18 these included:

  • A project to review and inspect of waste practices by students within the College of Engineering.
  • A coffee cup bin survey at the Bay Campus by Human and health Science students to identify prime locations for placement of coffee cup bins.
  • A survey by our Civil Engineering students of the absolute altitude of the three water table monitoring dip wells in the University’s Site of Special Scientific Interest, as part of the University’s commitment to Biodiversity.
  • Various environmental monitoring activities by bioscience students at Singleton Park Campus as part of the curriculum (birds, hedgehogs, bats etc.) which feeds directly into the University’s Biodiversity Action Plan.
  • Habitat, access and invasive species management and beach cleans carried out by student volunteers from across the University as part of our Biodiversity Action Plan and our Site of Special Scientific Interest Management Plan.
