I am an actuary and a mathematician.  I conducted pure mathematics research and taught over 50 modules of university mathematics in the U.S. before training as an actuary with Aegon Insurance’s Transamerica division.  In 24 years with Transamerica, I carried out research and development for dozens of life assurance and annuity products and managed actuarial support for over 10 million in-force policies.  Now my entire focus is on developing the Swansea University Actuarial Science programme to provide great opportunities for future actuaries.

I am a Fellow of the U.S. Society of Actuaries and am engaged in the actuarial community in Wales as well as the UK Institute and Faculty of Actuaries.  I am active in outreach to schools across Wales and enjoy presenting on insurance careers and actuarial mathematics.

Areas of Expertise

  • Actuarial mathematics and statistics
  • Life assurance and annuity product development and in-force management
  • Composition operator theory on Banach spaces of analytic functions

Teaching

  • MA-131 Geometry: Mathematics, Logic and Communication

An introduction to Euclidean geometry and the axiomatic method, as a basis for developing general mathematical skills including logic and communication.

  • MA-192 Applied Statistics

The module is an introductory course on applied statistics. It will cover a variety of statistical tests, criteria for choosing appropriate tests, and the use of statistical software in dealing with large data sets.
