About

Dr Sara Jones is a lecturer in pubic health in Swansea University and a researcher In the Centre for Lactation Infant Feeding and Translational research (LIFT). She qualified as an adult nurse in 2009 and as specialist community public health nurse (health visitor) in 2014.

Her experience in nursing is primarily within the A&E setting and acute medicine and has worked in A&E in the UK and Australia. In 2014 she worked as a health visitor for a short time before returning to work in A&E nursing alongside undertaking a PhD in public health which was awarded in 2020. Her PhD ‘The SHIFT study: exploring the role of a baby-led feeding approach on infant growth - implications for childhood obesity’ explored the impact of different infant feeding methods on infant growth and childhood obesity. She continues to undertake research in the field of infant feeding and maternal health.

She also has an interest in global public health and has volunteered as an infant feeding expert in migrant and displaced communities.

Sara is a qualified yoga teacher and teaches in the evenings and weekends.

Taught Modules

PPS102 Poverty and Plenty

This module challenges students to think about the relationships between those in need and those with plenty from the 18th century to today. Using online and traditionally sourced primary sources students will ask questions about why poverty has been perceived as the poor persons¿ fault, and in turn interrogates the motivations of the more affluent in their participation in philanthropic ventures. Themes will include state welfare, private charity, the rise and fall of 20th century welfare practices, and the fall and rise of the finance industry.
PPS108 Introduction to Research in Health and Social Care

This module provides an introduction to the origins of the most common theoretical perspectives used in health and social care research.
SHGM104 Nutrition for Public Health Improvement

The module applies public health and health promotion principles to nutrition. Nutrition is a key element to improving public health. Over-nutrition and under-nutrition are international problems that occur in developed as well as developing nations. The module includes an overview of basic nutrients and requirements through the life-cycle. We will focus on overweight and obesity, nutritional deficiencies, diabetes, coronary heart disease, and cancer. Nutritional policies and approaches to public health nutrition on a local, national and international level will be covered. The module develops the nutrition knowledge and skills required by health and social care professions and other interested individuals. Links to relevant sustainable development are made.
SHGM38 Foundations in Research

The purpose of this module is to provide a critical understanding of the research process and methodological approaches to sound applied research. The module will be delivered in a systematic approach facilitating individual and group learning, and will stimulate the development of research skills that will enable learners to apply them in their work environment and contribute to strengthening the notion and implementation of evidence based practice.
SHGM57 Dissertation (MSc Public Health and Health Promotion)

This module builds on the knowledge and skills developed in part one of the programme. Specifically, students will be prepared to work independently in order to critically explore the evidence base for a topic of interest or relevance to their own professional practice.
SHTM34 Teaching and Learning for the Health Professions' Educators

This module has been designed to prepare educators from a variety of health professions for a role in teaching, supervising and assessing students and trainees in practice and academic settings. It aims to prepare educators to work within a developmental framework in the context of interprofessional learning and modern day health services. This module will form part of the Postgraduate Certificate in Education for the Health Professions.
