• EG-062 Fundamentals of Engineering Design

  Fundamentals of Engineering Design provides the essential skills required for future design modules and project tasks. Building on existing experience while developing the individual and group key skills required for successful study. Provides a firm grounding for teamwork, emphasising professional standards and communication into future careers.

• EG-080 Fundamentals of Materials

  This module is designed for Foundation Year engineering students and is intended to provide the fundamental principles underlying properties of materials based on their elemental composition, structure, and their uses in engineering in the following areas: construction materials; steel and other metals; cement; fuels and oils; polymers; composites; timbers; lubricants; adhesives.

• EG-091 Chemistry of Materials

  This course provides an introduction to the chemical properties of materials used throughout engineering. A practical component will be used to complement taught theory and will allow students to develop the skills to carry out a number of basic laboratory manipulations in an accurate and safe manner. Fundamental knowledge regarding atomic structure and chemical bonding will be used to select the most appropriate material (or group of materials) for use within given applications, and to understand the ways in which chemical reactions are utilized within a range of engineering processes.

• EG-092 Fundamentals of Engineering Science 1

  This course provides an introduction to the physical sciences (including thermal, electrical and optical properties of matter) and their application in engineering. A practical component will be used to complement taught theory.

• EG-094 Fundamentals of Engineering Design

  This module provides the essential skills required for future design modules and project tasks by providing a firm grounding for teamwork and emphasizing the need for professional standards and strong communication skills within engineering.

• EG-124 Critical Thinking in Engineering

  Engineers solve problems. Rarely though are problems simple with obvious, clear and perfect solutions. As such it is important that students are equipped with the skills and awareness to critically analyse complex situations in order to come to the best possible conclusions, and understand how to apply moral reasoning to ethical scenarios. This course aims to turn students away from black and white thinking and to prepare them for difficult decision making by applying critical thinking skills to real life scenarios. This will be done through exploring case studies that concern the social, economic and environmental impact of engineering systems. Historic examples (e.g. the Tryweryn dam in North Wales) and contemporary examples (e.g. conflicting drivers behind drivers to resolve climate crisis and the immediate costs involved in de-carbonising the construction sector). Students will explore how to critically analyse a situation from multiple viewpoints, dissecting and evaluating arguments.

• EG-133 Engineering for People Hackathon

  Engineering is more than understanding technical design, it is often the social, environmental and economic context underpinning engineering solutions that determine success or failure, This has never been more relevant since the world is currently planning a radical transition to a low carbon economy while facing increased risks due to climate crisis which will bring with it unprecedented change to the world. Engineers will be at the forefront of this, and need to be equipped to tackle open-ended, unstructured and complex problems in collaboration with others. The module will allow students to explore these issues within their chosen discipline with the following structure: Each week there will be a 1-hour lecture, introducing engineering thinking and contemporary issues in global engineering design. Most activity will then take place in group-work sessions (3 hours per week), where groups of around 6 students will work in a facilitated way towards a Engineering design solution. Students will be presented with a range of Global Challenges (e.g. access to water/ off-grid energy), and over the course of the term will work to research, design and critique possible engineering solutions. The groups with the best performance in this module may have opportunities to represent Swansea University in the national Engineers without Borders UK competition.

• EG-139 Critical thinking and maths-based problem solving for Engineers

  Part 0: Academic Integrity - A 2 hour lecture & discussion session to be delivered by the Civil Engineering Programme Director. Students will consider a set of common academic scenarios in which the Academic Integrity must be explored. Assessment via online test. Part 2: Maths based problem solving This part of the module will examine how maths based problem solving approaches and tools can be used to solve real world engineering problems. The module will introduce planning, program conceptual development and structured programming skills utilising the popular software Matlab.

• EG-M190 Social, environmental and economic context of research

  There is an increasing need for engineers to work towards complex, so called 'wicked problems', for example the secure supply of energy. This necessitates a holistic approach and involves making decisions based on a range of different factors, and consideration for economic, ethical, social, political and environmental, as well as technical limitations. Obtaining and making sense of such information involves types of knowledge and the use of tools and techniques that have not always been traditionally used within engineering disciplines. For example, ethical issues concerning negative impacts on environment or society may raise questions of value, duty or morality and requires the application of moral reasoning rather than scientific reasoning. During this module we will make use of a variety of engineering case studies which exemplify the need to consider non-technical aspects of engineering projects. We will use qualitative research approaches and ethical frameworks to help in our engineering decision making. We will also consider the role of the engineer in policy making.
