About

Dr Jonathan Phillips is the Magnetic Resonance Physics Lead for Swansea Bay University Health Board (SBUHB). He took on this role in April 2020, after joining Swansea University Medical School in 2012.

Quantitative imaging drives his research interests, which include both the fundamental physical interpretations of the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) signal and clinical applications. Jon's main research interest is currently non-Gaussian diffusion-weighted imaging.

As a registered Clinical Scientist, Jon is the Magnetic Resonance Safety Expert (MRSE) for Swansea University and SBUHB. He provides highly-specialised training to NHS Wales Trainee Clinical Scientists in MRI as part of the scientific training programme (STP).

Teaching Interests

Jon teaches on various courses in the Medical School and is the module lead for PMPM04: Medical Imaging. He is also a fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA).

Jon is the MRI physics training lead for trainees enrolled on the scientific training programme (STP) in NHS Wales. Trainees spend a four-week rotation in MRI where they gain practical experience on Swansea University's MRI scanner. In September 2020 we will be welcoming our first specialist trainees in Imaging with Non-ionising Radiation.

The physics and mathematics underpinning modern 3D medical imaging, including MRI, CT, PET and Ultrasound.
PMPM16 Advanced MRI Physics

This module focuses on advanced MRI techniques and MRI safety. Mathematical and physical principles behind the formation of the MRI image will be covered, together with the key parameters that define optimal image quality in MRI for a range of clinical/research applications. Specialist methods including magnetic resonance spectroscopy, perfusion MRI, diffusion MRI, functional MRI, magnetic resonance angiography will be covered. This module is part 1 of the imaging with non-ionising radiation clinical science specialism.
PMPM26 Specialist Imaging with Non-ionising Radiation

This module is part 2 of the imaging with non-ionising radiation clinical science specialism.
PMZM13 Diagnostics and Imaging

Nanotechnology may lead to more rapid diagnostic tests, implantable devices, point of care instruments and improved medical imaging. This module will explore the application of nanotechnology to various medical techniques, focussing on novel research devices, pre-clinical tools and emerging technology within hospitals.
