About

Professor Davies is a clinical academic medical microbiologist. She undertook her undergraduate medical school training at the University of Cambridge and her specialist training in medical microbiology at the Royal Free Hospital, London, before being awarded an MRC Clinical Research Training Fellowship at University College London, where she completed her PhD studies on dormancy in Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

She is honorary consultant medical microbiologist at the England and Wales national Cryptosporidium Reference Unit, Public Health Wales, and has a research interest in infection with this organism. She is also Health and Care Research Wales Infection Specialty Lead and sits on the NIHR Infection National Specialty Group.

In 2020 Professor Davies was elected Vice-President for Learning for the Royal College of Pathologists.

She is a member of the UK REF2021 Equality and Diversity Advisory panel and in 2020-2021 was Deputy Chair of the BMA’s Women in Academic Medicine group.

Professor Davies is a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

She leads the Education and Training workstream of the Wales Antimicrobial Resistance Delivery Board and has a particular interest in education of medical students and healthcare professionals in the field of antimicrobial resistance and stewardship.

At Swansea, she leads the Defence theme on the Graduate Entry Medicine programme and is academic lead for the clinical microbiology strand of the MSc in Biomedical Science. She has established an interprofessional CPD course on infection management and antibiotic stewardship for NHS staff. She also leads a module on the MSc in Genomic Medicine on Applications of Genomics to Infectious Disease, and an undergraduate module on antibiotic resistance and stewardship for the Applied Medical Sciences degree course.

This module provides medical students with the foundation of scientific knowledge, which is required for the practice of medicine. Based on the professional knowledge domain of the GMC¿s ¿Outcomes for Graduates (2020), this module enables students to develop their scientific knowledge within a clinical context.
PM-262 Antimicrobial therapy and resistance

This module will focus on the principles of antimicrobial therapy and development of resistance. This is one of the most important issues facing modern medicine and the module will have a clinical emphasis. The module will provide an understanding of the development, mechanisms and implications of antimicrobial resistance and the principles of appropriate prescribing and antibiotic stewardship, with particular reference to current UK clinical practice. Resistance in bacteria (including mycobacteria) and viruses will be covered. Dry practicals will be used to teach relevant test interpretation.
PM-344 Capstone Project

The aim of this module is to provide a capstone experience to students¿ learning, through participating in their own enquiry-based research project, with guidance from an academic supervisor. The project may be laboratory or non-laboratory based, but it will always involve a research question that is drawn from the literature, and focused on a topic relevant to the life sciences. It will ask a research question and involve the critical analysis of research findings. Students will refine their oral and written communication skills to a graduate level through an oral presentation and dissertation on their research findings and conclusions.

The module is suitable for health professionals working in fields related to infection, such as antimicrobial pharmacists and infection control nurses, as well as for all students interested in this applied subject area.

The module is for students to build on their previous knowledge, skills and experience by undertaking a laboratory based or suitable non-laboratory based project on a specific subject related to genomics.
PMGM24 Application of Genomics in Infectious Disease

In this module the student will learn about the genomic structure of infectious agents, implication of acquisition or loss of nucleotides, genes and plasmids on pathogenicity, sensitivity of a pathogen to drug treatment and outbreak control. Students will learn about infection as a cause of national and global morbidity and mortality, transmission of human infections: person to person, food and water-borne, sexually transmitted, vector-borne, prokaryotes, their¿genome, replication and population¿genetics, genomic characterisation of viruses:¿DNA¿and¿RNA¿genomes, single-stranded, double stranded, segmented, genomic comparisons of microbial strains in the context of outbreaks and transmissions in hospitals and the community, laboratory diagnosis, including genomic techniques and technologies, and appropriate sample type, analysis and interpretation of genomic data, and the role of bioinformatics, anti-infective drug action, mutation¿rate and drug resistance, genomic evidence of individual susceptibility to specific infection and the role of genomics in: infectious disease diagnosis, drug selection, resistance, monitoring and epidemic control. The students will also learn how to perform aspects of in-silico analyses on microbial gene sequences, in a workshop setting.
