About

Aled graduated from Cardiff University with a BSc (Hons) in Microbiology. Following this, Aled undertook a PhD in medical/molecular microbiology at the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff looking into the mechanistic antimicrobial properties of manuka honey on the problematic bacterial pathogen, Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Aled further developed his research skills through a Human Frontiers Science Program research grant at the Centre of Biomolecular Sciences, Nottingham University. Here he investigated how bacterial cells (primarily Pseudomonas aeruginosa) arranged themselves into complex 3D communities (biofilms). Aled then returned to wales to continue his studies into the mechanistic effects of manuka honey and its potential as a therapeutic for patients suffering from Cystic Fibrosis (CF) lung infections, via two Hodge Foundation funded Post-Doctoral positions. Aled is currently a lecturer at Swansea University, teaching on both the Applied Medical Sciences, Genetics and Biochemistry degree courses. Aled has held positions on the Society for Applied Microbiology’s Early Career Scientist Committee and is a keen to help develop the skills of Early Career Scientists.
