About

Emily Bacon is a Senior Lecturer based in the School of Management. She completed her PhD in Business Management in 2020. Emily researches knowledge transfer and collaboration within innovation ecosystems, applying analytical techniques such as fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA) to study inter-organisational partnerships. Her findings have been published in internationally renowned peer-reviewed journals and presented at leading academic conferences.

Emily teaches on the Advanced Health and Care Management MSc (Value-Based) which is part of the Welsh Government Intensive Learning Academy (ILA) Programme. She is interested in using case-based learning to help learners apply theory-based principles to practical problems. She has published case studies illustrating the application of value-based health and care principles via The Case Centre.

Emily holds a PgCert and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. She is passionate about creating inclusive learning environments for her students. She is actively seeking PhD students who are interested in exploring inter-organisational relationships across innovation networks, particularly using the technique of fsQCA.

MN-M549 Research Methods

This module will provide an introduction to the fundamentals of research methods and methodologies to better prepare students on how to conduct a dissertation. The lectures and seminars will be split to cover both the theoretical and practical nature associated with research. They will cover all aspects of research methods: from what is research, the ethics associated with conducting research, the literature review, methodology and what types of research exist such as quantitative and qualitative. This module will highlight the links that exist between each stage of the research development process. As well as developing traditional research methods skills, this module will also focus on the development of career enhancing employability skills.
MN-MAH8P Value-Based Health and Care Strategy Implementation: Leadership and People

VBHC represents a significant change in the way health and care systems operate and therefore, effective implementation requires strong leadership skills to bring colleagues on the journey. It also requires an understanding of how to change organisational culture and embed innovation. Students will critically appraise the different leadership, culture change and innovation theories and explore how these can be applied to support the creation of VBHC systems. This will be delivered through a variety of approaches, including Case-Based Discussion, with cases drawn from examples across the NHS in Wales and more widely. Through the cases, we will explore challenges that health and care systems have faced and discuss with your peers how you would address the challenge from the position of an organisational leader. We will then explore how your solutions relate to what happened in practice and how the different approaches relate to established theories in leadership, culture change and innovation.
MNBM039P Innovation and Value in Health and Care

There is a growing requirement for health and social care systems to adopt a value-based approach to lead organisational and system-wide transformation through innovative ideas that benefit both the patient and the organisation. The future challenges call for a new total pathway of care approach, underpinned by value-based principles, to harness new disruptive technologies and apply innovative procurement approaches to drive sustainable change. This module explores Value-Based Health and Care (VBHC) in the context of other similar global approaches (ie. Slow Medicine, Appropriate and Effective Healthcare, Choosing Wisely) and how its adoption can drive innovation and transformational change in healthcare systems. This module examines the policy context underlying the need for change and the basis for cross-sector collaboration to deliver high value integrated care at a population and individual level. Through real-world case-based discussions drawn from the NHS in Wales and beyond, learners will critically assess how innovation and VBHC work together to deliver sustainable solutions for delivering better outcomes that matter to people.
