About

Dr. Troy Leiland Sagrillo is a Senior Lecturer in Egyptology in the Department of Classics, Ancient History, and Egyptology. He is also the Postgraduate Programme Director for both Taught and Research degrees in the department.

Dr. Sagrillo’s primary areas of research interests are focused on the history of ancient Egypt following the New Kingdom imperial period, particularly during the Libyan rule of the country (Dynasties 22–24), as well as subsequent dynasties before the arrival of Alexander the Great. Over the past several years, he has developed a growing interest in the reception of ancient Egypt in contemporary society, both in the West and in East Asia, and the use of video games as a medium for teaching about history and the ancient world.

Prior to his appointment at Swansea University, Dr. Sagrillo was a Visiting Lecturer in Egyptology in Departments of History and Archaeology of Peking University, Beijing, China; and a lecturer in the Department of Anthropology, University of Colorado at Boulder, USA.

Dr. Sagrillo has a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Egyptology from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium; his dissertation was on the reign of the Libyan king, Shoshenq I (biblical Shîshaq), founder of Dynasty 22. He completed a Master of Arts (MA) degree in Syro-Palestinian Archaeology in the Department of Near Eastern Studies, University of Arizona, Tucson. He also has a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree in Illustration and Graphic Design from the Kansas City Art Institute, Kansas City, Missouri, and uses his artistic skills as an epigrapher and archaeological illustrator on archaeological missions in Egypt.
