Korfball secures place in the national championship
In only it’s second year being a sport at Swansea University Korfball has made a big impact.
On Saturday, we took part in the Welsh Prelims for BUC’s, a tournament that we only just managed to scrape a qualifying position last year. This year there were three extra teams added, totalling eight teams, so it was a massive challenge to come top five and progress to the next stage of competitions as the majority of our players only started playing this year.
We started the day with two wins securing our place in the top four, we then had the game for 3rd/4th place which was against Bristol 2 team, an established team with many experienced players. It was a very close game and in the last couple of minutes Bristol scored taking them one goal up.
There was little time left and we needed two goals to secure the win, we got the ball down to attack and Luke Thomas scored an equalizer. We had one more attack after this, Bristol fouled a running in shot against Emma Carswell which was called a penalty as the last play of the game. She scored taking the final score to 5-4!
This brought us in at 3rd place, an amazing outcome for such a new team. This victory secures us a place in one of the 3 National competitions later in the year!
