JACOB DRAPER SELECTED FOR GB UNDER 21’S AND THE ELITE DEVELOPMENT SQUAD

Swansea University Men’s Hockey Club’s very own Jacob Draper was selected to play for GB Hockey in the Sultan of Johor Cup in Malaysia in October 2017.

The Sultan of Johor Cup is an annual, under 21’s tournament consisting of 6 teams; GB, Australia, India, Malaysia, USA and Japan. GB were unbeaten in the Preliminary round fixtures of the tournament with the following results,

  • Great Britain (1) vs Malaysia (0)
  • Great Britain (11) vs USA (0)
  • Great Britain (4) vs Australia (2)
  • Great Britain (3) vs Japan (1)
  • Great Britain (2) vs India (1)

GB headed into the final of the tournament against the defending champions Australia, and with the squad already beating the Aussies in the preliminaries gave them a very good chance to come home victorious like the 2015 squad. Unfortunately, Australia turned up the heat in the final and came away with a 2-0 win over GB.

In November 2017, Jacob was named in the Great Britain Men’s Elite Development Programme which aims to develop medal-winning Olympians of the future. Jacob is also hoping to continue his development with the Wales Squad for the Commonwealth Games in Australia in April 2018.

We wish Jacob all the best in his development on the international stage.
