Table tennis is one of the performance sports here at Swansea University. Our performance sports receives high performance coaching, sport science services, athlete lifestyle management, physiotherapy and strength and conditioning support.
The table tennis academy has multiple teams and individuals who compete in the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) competitions. The table tennis academy also competes at the annual Varsity event against Cardiff University, which is the second largest British Varsity event behind Oxford and Cambridge. The table tennis academy has access to world class facilities and equipment at the International Sport Village (ISV). The academy also has access to the rest of ISV’s facilities and ‘The Shed’ our elite strength and conditioning centre.
The table tennis academy currently offers 6+ hours of on the table training at the University. For our high performance players there are separate 1-2-1 or 1-2-2 multiball sessions. The high performance programme is fully supported by Table Tennis Wales with opportunities to link up and train with national squad players and joint training camps. We also have fantastic links to local clubs and leagues where players are always welcome to join and train at their clubs and centres for further practice. Our table tennis academy is open to Para players and able-bodied players.
Our full time coach Matthew Porter is employed by Table Tennis Wales to coach the table tennis academy as well as develop table tennis in Swansea and the surrounding areas. Matt has been involved in Table Tennis for over 20 years and for the past 8 years he has been managing and coaching at Bishop Auckland Table Tennis Club in the North East. His exprience includes working with the England, Scotland and Cyprus National youth squads. Matt brings a range of both coaching and development knowledge to the programme, he is currently a UKCC level 3 coach and is in the process of completing his UKCC level 4.
The university also offers Talented Athlete Scholarship Schemes (TASS) to highly talented student athletes with financial benefits up to £2000 and a support package which may include; strength and conditioning training, physiotherapy, psychological aid and nutritional advice, all delivered by qualified practitioners. There are many scholarship packages available.
The table tennis club welcomes all prospective players, regardless of sporting background, skill level or experience.
