Netball is part of the ‘High Performance Sport Programme’ at Swansea University. High performance sports at Swansea University receive; high performance coaching, sport science services, athlete lifestyle management, physiotherapy and strength and conditioning support.

The netball club is one of the biggest clubs the university has to offer with 168 members and a total of five competitive squads. Three of the squads compete in the BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sport) leagues and the remaining two squads play in the local Swansea leagues.

Last season, (2017-18) the 1st team secured promotion to BUCS Western 1A. Our primary aim is to take the Swansea University Netball Club (SUNC) back up one division to the Premiership where many top class Super-League players regularly compete. In the first season, in this most competitive division, the team have had some outstanding performances achieving three wins against other well established Universities.

The 2nd squad achieved the runners up place in Western 4B for the last two years and were unlucky not to achieve promotion this year. Similarly, the 3rd squad have ended two seasons as runners up in Western 5B. The highlight of the season for the 3rds was the cup win over Cardiff Met who were the winners of Western 5B, 2018-19.

The 4th and 5th squad compete in the local Swansea Netball League and have both narrowly missed promotion losing only 2 games in the season. Intramural netball is thriving with 5 or 6 teams playing and training on a Wednesday afternoon. The coaches work hard to provide good opportunities and fun for all abilities.

Large aspirational squads ensure that a good selection and availability are secured for all games. This allows good opportunities for ‘freshers’ to have maximum opportunity to showcase their netball after the initial trial weekend. We have further trials at Christmas to maximise aspiration and allow for movement between squads.

The netball club competes at the annual Varsity event against Cardiff University, which is the second largest British Varsity event behind Oxford and Cambridge. The netball club are based at the International Sports Village (ISV’s) and has access to the rest of ISV’s facilities and ‘The Shed’ our elite strength and conditioning centre.

Swansea University Netball Club has a tremendous reputation for providing opportunities to take responsibility. We have an active management committee that organises a host of activities that include weekly social meetings, monthly charity events and annual celebrations of success. At this event the committee are elected each year. We are particularly proud of our annual fund raising totals and support for local charities.

The club also takes pride in offering an inclusive family network that has student wellbeing as a core focus. Each squad has a leadership team that includes positional and unit leads to support the captain and a wellbeing rep who is available for 1-1s and to liaise with team coaches. To facilitate whole club cohesion, experienced players from the high performance squads also contribute to coaching all squads. On a seasonal rota they work alongside coaches to help develop less experienced players.

Last year funded professional development opportunities were also offered to members. A trainee coaches’ role was established which included coach education, mentoring and responsibility for a squad. There are also paid umpiring opportunities where training courses and gaining qualifications are offered.

The university offers Talented Athlete Scholarship Schemes (TASS) to highly talented student athletes with financial benefits up to £3000 and a support package which may include; strength and conditioning training, physiotherapy, psychological aid and nutritional advice, all delivered by qualified practitioners. There are many scholarship packages available.

Swansea University Netball Club is a club where the expectation is to be happy, feel supported and have many opportunities to develop your game. The netball club welcomes all prospective players, regardless of sporting background, skill level or experience.
