Both Men’s and Women’s Hockey are part of our high performance programme here at Swansea University. Our high performance sports receive; elite coaching, sport science services, athlete lifestyle management, physiotherapy and strength and conditioning support.
Hockey has a total of four men’s teams and four women’s teams competing in the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) competitions. Both first teams currently compete in the BUCS Premier South, one off the top league. The club also competes at the annual Varsity event against Cardiff University, which is the second largest British Varsity event behind Oxford and Cambridge.
The hockey club has access to world class facilities, playing at the International Sports Village (ISV) with two waterbed astroturf pitches. The club also has access to the rest of ISV’s facilities and ‘The Shed’, our elite strength and conditioning centre.
As part of Swansea Hockey Club, the men’s teams also compete in the West League of England Hockey and the Welsh Cup. The 1st XI play in the Championship, two steps off National league, and the club teams filter down to provide a competitive standard for all players.
For the women’s teams, as part of Swansea Hockey Club, they play in the English National League, and throughout the South Wales Leagues. The Ladies 1st XI play in the National League Northern Division 1 and are looking to be promoted to the Premier division. They also play in European competitions both indoor and outdoor. Again the teams filter down the leagues to ensure there is a team suitable for everyone.
The club has a home for all hockey players whether that’s a player pushing for an international cap, players looking to improve their skills and fitness or players who want to have a good game of hockey with their friends. We also have a men’s and ladies’ development team which brings together beginners, those returning to the sport and our juniors.
In addition to playing, Swansea Hockey Club offers a platform to develop as an Umpire or Coach. Over the past few years, we have seen a number of our umpires and coaches represent the University and Club at National and International tournaments.
The university offers Talented Athlete Scholarship Schemes (TASS) to highly talented student athletes with financial benefits up to £2000 and a support package which may include; strength and conditioning training, physiotherapy, psychological aid and nutritional advice, all delivered by qualified practitioners. There are many scholarship packages available.
The hockey club welcomes all prospective players, regardless of sporting background, skill level or experience.
