Coronavirus: latest information

In 2015, Catherine Hunt, team manager and captain, and I as coach, started Swansea University’s female staff netball team. We are both passionate about netball and wanted to provide opportunity for female colleagues at Swansea University to participate in a team sport to encourage fitness and wellbeing, and to promote a positive work life balance. There are 120 members signed up to the netball club, both academic and professional services staff.

In the last two years, Rachel Thomas assisted with coaching and it has been a pleasure for the three of us to watch female staff develop their netball skills and more importantly the squad have connected and become good friends. In addition to playing netball and increasing fitness levels, the club has allowed us to meet with colleagues, and to share and chat about work and life.

We have played against students, local netball clubs and also for the last five years, taken part in the Welsh Varsity Cymru where we play against the Cardiff University staff netball team. We have enjoyed winning and also on occasion, graciously accepted defeat.

The Swansea University staff netball club is a great way to improve fitness in a female team sport environment, but it is also more than this, it brings colleagues together and we have had good fun. Long may it continue.
