Dr Christopher Lowe
Science officer, SEACAMS2
I am a marine biologist, specialising in planktonic micro-organisms, but with a broad basis of understanding of marine systems, ranging from benthic marine surveys, maritime and environmental law, and intertidal survey to large scale modelling of the marine environment with human societies and the economy.
I have over ten years of experience working at the science policy and science business interface, initially through post-doctoral work at Plymouth University where I was involved in the EU ELME and SPICOSA projects which developed methods for the management of coastal areas through stakeholder engagement. I now work in the SEACAMS project as an environmental assessment and analysis scientific officer where I have primarily been working with biological water quality issues associated with coastal businesses. I am now focussing on development of methods of biological, chemical and physical parameters in the water column using remote techniques including optical and acoustic technologies.

Laboratory Technician, SEACAMS2
My professional background is in science communication, teaching practical science skills like dissection and growing microorganisms. My research background is in aquatic species and their behavioural changes and capacity for learning simple tasks. I also have a background in law. For SEACAMS 2 I joined the team in March 2017 and am one of the laboratory technician team where I offer assistance to all of our projects.
Decapod crustacean behaviour, boldness in crustaceans, ocean acidification and effects on behaviour, learning in invertebrates.
I am an aquatic ecologist (Bachelor and Master's Degree in Ecology and Conservation of Nature) , specialised in zooplankton and phytoplankton ecology and biology. I am finishing my PhD at Swansea University. I used experimental laboratory microcosm and modelling approaches to address a variety of key questions to understand more in detail the defensive strategies that algae put in act against predation. I also used metabolomics to characterise physiological changes in phytoplankton.
I work part-time in the SEACAMS group as a Laboratory Technician, focusing on biological water quality issues associated with coastal businesses, performing DNA and morphometric analysis on fish.
Talk to me about: phytoplankton and zooplankton ecology and taxonomy, predator-prey interactions, toxicology analysis using Daphnia as model organism, laboratory analysis, pond and river sampling.
Dr Christopher Coates
Research expertise: invertebrate immunology, protein biochemistry: haemocyanin and phenoloxidase, cellular biology: apoptosis and phagocytosis, Limulus polyphemus; Nephrops norvegicus; Galleria mellonella, antimicrobial peptides and cryptides, hyperpigmentation and commercial shellfish.
The haemolymph (blood) of marine gastropods is a potential source of antimicrobial compounds and biopharmaceuticals. Of particular interest is the oxygen-transport protein, haemocyanin, due to its high commercial value as a vaccine adjuvant. Under SEACAMS2, we will prospect the invasive slipper limpet, Crepidula fornicata, for potential bioactives - alongside efforts to determine its impact on Welsh coastlines.

Dr Carole Llewellyn
Carole’s area of expertise is in algae covering ecological, environmental impact and sustainability aspects. She is particularly interested in using algae to develop solutions to global challenges such as pollution and the need to develop a low carbon economy.
