After a break of 20 years, Swansea University students once again have a Geology Society!

After doing geological field research for their dissertations in the Colorado Plateau in September 2011 (see last Newsletter), final-year Geography students Joe Sains, Matt Whitney and Jeremy Suter wanted to share their enthusiasm for geology with other students by setting up a Geology Society through the Students’ Union.

SU Geology Soc Blaenavon March 2012Their first outing, to Big Pit National Coal-mining Museum at Blaenavon, attracted 12 students and geology lecturer Geraint Owen, despite stiff competition on the day from the England-Wales rugby international!  A second field trip in early March took a group of 22 students and staff on a hunt for dinosaur footprints and trackways.  The hunt was successful, and the group can be seen below admiring a particularly fine footprint.  A further visit is planned, to the waterfall country at the head of the Vale of Neath, a spectacular landscape shaped by geology.

SU Geology Soc Porthcawl March 2012 Membership of the Society is open to students and staff, and is particularly relevant to the recently-formed degree scheme in Physical Earth Science, in which students study geology in each year alongside physical geography.  The College of Science has made a financial contribution towards the Society’s activities.
