Royal Entomology Society Meeting

Royal Entomology Society Meeting 26-28 July 2010

The meeting saw the bringing together of more than 160 entomologists and industrial companies involved in insect products and pest control.

As part of the conference individual meetings were arranged thanks to funding from the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) between delegates allowing new academic-industrial relations to be formed. In total, 167 meeting requests were made during the meeting from scientists from universities across the world (including Brazil, Netherlands, Russia, USA and Canada), The Food and Environment Research Agency, The Natural History Museum, NASA and CAB International.

Plenary Lectures were given by Professor Norman Ratcliffe from Swansea, Dr Sharmila Bhattacharya from NASA, Professor Eloi Garcia from Brazil and Professor John Pickett from Pothhamsted.

Over the course of 3 days, 70 oral presentations were given covering as diverse subjects as the development of new drugs from insects, the potential of insects as food products, how insects can aid forensic science, what insects can tell us about the effects of space travel and the role of insect immunity in fighting many tropical diseases.
