Swansea University recognises the crucial contribution that research staff make to our internationally excellent and world-leading research. The success of our research staff underpins our ambition which will drive forward research quality, create a suitable environment for research to flourish, whilst ensuring that the impact of our research is maximised. To this end, we are committed to providing a genuinely supportive environment and culture, where researchers can thrive both professionally and personally. Early Career Researchers (ECRs) are especially important to sustain high-quality research and the University is committed to valuing and promoting career development for this diverse group of staff.
Swansea University undertakes to fulfil this commitment through the implementation of the 2008 Concordat to Support the Career Development of Research Staff and has developed a policy and action plan outlining how this will be achieved. We will regularly review our Concordat action plan, and publish our progress on these pages.
HR Excellence in Research Award
The University holds the European Commission HR Excellence in Research Award in recognition of our commitment to support the Career Development of Research Staff. The award was first attained by the University in 2010 and renewed in January 2013, January 2015, January 2017 and June 2019. All our reports and plans are available to view on this page.
2018 HR Excellence in Research Report
In December 2018, the University submitted our application for renewal of the HR Excellence in Research Award. As part of the assessment process, we submitted a report detailing our progress over the last 2 years, a review of our Action Plan (January 2017 to December 2018), and a forward action plan (January 2019 to December 2020):
Reviewers undertook a telephone interview panel to clarify aspects of the report in February 2019
In June 2019 we were delighted to announce that we were successful in retaining this award.
2016 HR Excellence in Research Report
In December 2016, Swansea University submitted an application to have our HR Excellence in Research Award renewed. As part of the assessment process, we submitted a report detailing our progress over the last 2 years, a review of our 2015-16 action plan, and a forward action plan.
2014 HR Excellence in Research Report
In December 2014, the University submitted an application to have our HR Excellence in Research Award renewed. The process was carried out by a panel of external assessors and accredited by the European Commission. As part of the assessment process, we wrote a report to detail progress over the past 2 years, as well as forward plans.
Research Staff Working Group
The Research Staff Working Group (RSWG) was reinvigorated in 2016, and meets regularly. The PVC (Research) nominated a senior academic member of staff, Professor Perumal Nithiarasu, to Chair the Committee. The group has research staff from each College (nominated by Heads of College), and other members from Human Resources, the Employability Academy (SEA), Research Engagement & Innovation Services (REIS), Information Services and Systems and UCU (Trade Union).
The RSWG oversees the delivery of the Concordat Action Plan for Research Staff, to support personal, professional and career development aligned to the Researcher Development Framework (RDF), the University’s Strategic Plan and the University’s Strategic Equality Plan.
The group reports into the Committee for Research and Innovation Strategy (CRIS).
