Research and Innovation Awards

Swansea University has a longstanding strategic relationship with the EPSRC, and since the introduction of the EPSRC funded Impact Acceleration Account in 2012, the university has significantly enhanced its ability to exploit and facilitate new research.

The Swansea University Impact Awards, initiated through the IAA, began in 2014 to celebrate and showcase the plethora of world-leading research occurring across the university, and to provide an opportunity for our many collaborators to join in an event to recognise the substantial achievements and the impact arising from that research activity.

In 2016 the Impact Awards became the Research and Innovation Awards, and the number of award categories grew from six to ten to recognise the breadth of impactful research taking place across the university as well as the global reach it was achieving. Due to the success of the awards, Swansea University decided to award each winner with £2,000 to invest into further impactful research activity and to develop further research projects.

The continued success of the Research and Innovation Awards has enabled it to build year on year in scale and attendance, providing a raised visibility of the quality work happening here at Swansea University. From 2014, when the Impact Awards were held in the function room of a local hotel, the Research and Innovation Awards are now hosted within the university’s new and prestigious Great Hall, which provides the perfect backdrop to celebrate the incredible achievements happening at Swansea. The Research and Innovation Awards 2017-2018 were attended by 275 people, including Alun Cairns RT MP, and hosted by BBC Wales’ presenter Penny Roberts. Feedback for this event from all quarters has been superb, and can be summed up by the following comment from one of guest sponsors.
