Swansea University’s pioneering head of simulation and immersive learning is in the running for a prestigious St David Award, the national awards of Wales.

The St David Awards recognise and celebrate the exceptional achievements of people from all walks of life in Wales and abroad.

Professor Joanne Davies, founding director of Swansea University’s Simulation and Immersive Learning Centre (SUSIM) has been nominated for the innovation, science and technology award  for her national and international career in healthcare education, research and innovation.

Her nomination pays tribute to her blend of compassion and cutting-edge expertise and the way she has transformed the training landscape by ensuring simulation-based learning provides a real-world impact. It adds that Professor Davies’s visionary leadership has positioned Wales at the forefront of healthcare training while she exemplifies innovation with humanity.

Professor Davies said: “I am humbled and deeply proud to have been nominated for such an honour; to be shortlisted is a wonderful accolade for what SUSIM and the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Life Science teams and I are trying to achieve at Swansea.

“It is a personal honour that also recognises the impact that SUSIM has had since it opened its doors in September 2023. We now offer an unrivalled learning experience  to our future health professionals and existing staff allowing them to hone and improve their practice. By supporting medical teams and growing the next generation of health professionals we know we are making a real difference to patient care.”

This year there are 11 St David Awards, the first ten of which are nominated for by the public. The finalists and winners are decided upon by the First Minister of the Welsh Government Eluned Morgan and her advisors.

The winners announced at a ceremony to be held in Cardiff later this month.
