Professor Ceri Phillips, head of the College of Human and Health Sciences, said: “We are very proud of our Department of Nursing, but it is very rewarding to receive external recognition of its reputation – especially when it is based on students’ perception and nomination.

“We are delighted to receive such an award, which stands alongside other accolades in recent times, and reinforces Swansea as one of the primary providers of nurse education in Wales, the UK and further afield.”

The Department also had three other shortlisted entries at the awards, which are held annually to celebrate the achievements of the student nursing community across the UK.

Swansea’s award-winning team are now looking forward to sharing details of the undergraduate courses at upcoming open days.

The next event, highlighting nursing, midwifery and maternity care courses, takes place at the University’s satellite campus at St David’s Park in Carmarthen on Wednesday, May 15 from 4pm to 7pm.

Course leaders are particularly keen to highlight the standard of tuition and professional support prospective students from West Wales could enjoy closer to home.

Those who attend will have a chance to meet staff as well as hearing from current students about their experiences.

For Hanna Davies, from Capel Dewi Aberystwyth, attending lectures in Carmarthen meant she was able to share lifts, helping her to cut costs as she fulfilled her childhood dream.

“When I was a little girl my granddad had cancer and he always told my mum that one day I would make a good nurse and that inspired me to study a nursing degree,” she said.

A passion for helping people and the opportunity to study through the medium of Welsh meant adult nursing at Swansea University was the perfect choice for Elen Martin.

Coming from Carmarthen, Elen was delighted the course would not only allow her to train at on her own doorstep the St David’s Park campus but also on the wards of Glangwili Hospital.

She said: “On the open day I attended I could see it would be the perfect university for me – it seemed very friendly and welcoming.

“I never thought I would be studying at degree level! My favourite part is definitely the variety of theory and practical.”

Elen added: “As a Welsh speaker I couldn't ask for better support from the university regarding studying in my first language. My personal tutor has always supported my needs and provided me with resources.”
