Swansea University Medical School has received accreditation by the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) for its MSc in Applied Analytical Science (LCMS).

The Swansea programme has satisfied the academic requirements of the award of Chartered Chemist (CChem) from 2015 and is awarded to qualifying students.

Mass SpecGareth Brenton, LCMS Programme Director, said: “Accreditation of postgraduate schemes has only recently been undertaken by the RSC and the Medical School’s programme is one of the first to achieve accreditation – something which we are immensely proud of.

“The unique combination of industry participation and course content on the LCMS at Swansea provides a vocationally-relevant qualification with invaluable training and experience which is very sought-after in the UK and worldwide, making our graduates highly employable.”

Professor Keith Lloyd, Dean of the Medical School, said: “Mass Spectrometry at Swansea has consistently delivered high-quality research, training, and teaching, underpinning many scientific areas and positively impacting on the competitiveness of Wales and UK science.

“This accreditation for the LCMS is a significant endorsement by the RSC and demonstrates how Swansea is maturing as a research-led medical school, and training future research leaders for academia and industry.”

World demand for mass spectrometry (MS) and chromatography has grown at an unprecedented rate, with qualified graduates in short supply and highly sought-after. Postgraduate training is essential as undergraduates are not taught to the required depth to serve the needs of industry.

Swansea University is the only UK institution to offer a range of schemes solely dedicated to these topics, drawing upon expertise in the Medical School’s Institute of Mass Spectrometry (IMS), which is home to the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) UK National Mass Spectrometry Facility, and based in a long established UK centre of excellence.

The MSc programme includes fundamentals of MS and chromatography with key industrial topics covering pharmaceutical, environmental and forensic analysis, data handling, professional management and good laboratory practice (GLP).
