This year, four students will receive a £3,000 scholarship from the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol to enable them to study a large part of their course through the medium of Welsh at Swansea University.

In order to receive the scholarship, students must choose to study at least 66% of their course through the medium of Welsh and over 200 courses were eligible for the scholarship this year in universities across Wales.

Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol Annual EventSeven institutions across Wales are part of the scholarship scheme: Swansea University, Aberystwyth University, Cardiff Metropolitan University, Bangor University, Cardiff University, the University of South Wales, and the University of Wales Trinity Saint David.

The scheme aims to increase the number of students studying through Welsh and those who have received a scholarship this year will study various disciplines from September onwards including Geography, Drama, Politics and Law.

The scholarships have  been awarded to: Tomas Davies and Lowri Thomas who will study Welsh, Aled Evans who will study Physical Geography, and Kayleigh Jones who will study Mathematics and Welsh.

Kayleigh Jones from Gower College, Swansea was delighted to hear that her application was successful: ‘‘I was so happy to be told that I would receive a Coleg Cymraeg scholarship! I have learnt Welsh as a second language so it’s important that I continue to use Welsh after I leave Gower College. Studying Mathematics through Welsh will no doubt help me to understand both the subject and language better. In future, I hope to train as a teacher and work through the medium of Welsh. I chose Swansea University as the staff were so welcoming and because its proximity to the beach!’’.

Dr Ioan Matthews, Chief Executive of the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol said: ‘‘We were glad to receive so many applications this year and see an increase the number of courses that are available to study through Welsh. I hope the successful students will see the benefit of studying through Welsh and take advantage of our Work Experience Programme and Welsh Language Skills Certificate as a result".
