Popular singer and prominent member of Only Men Aloud, Wyn Davies extended a warm welcome to visitors to the GwyddonLe pavilion at the Urdd Eisteddfod today.
Wyn conducted a series of interviews during his visit to the stand, all of which will be broadcast on a new science series on BBC Cymru called Wyn ar Wyddoniaeth.
Research by many Swansea University experts who work in microbiology, geography and biosciences will be showcased on the programme when broadcast for the first time on 3 June.
During the official opening, Wyn spoke about the opportunities available to work within science in Wales and explained how he has managed to fulfil a career as a pharmacist.
Wyn received a taste of the activities available at the GwyddonLe by participating in a number of scientific experiments with tomorrow’s scientists.
S4C, Techniquest, Technocamps, the Botanic Gardens, National Museum Wales and Swansea University’s College of Science and many more will showcase their work all week and offer a varied programme of events for visitors of all ages.
S4C will give young people a taste of what’s happening in the world of digital media today. They will encourage them to create and develop various digital products including Aps of all kinds.
On Thursday 30 May at 1pm Professor Julian Hopkin of the University’s Institute of Life Science will try to encourage the younger generation to follow a career in medicine. He hopes to ignite their enthusiasm and simulate discussions on important medical subjects.
There will be something for everyone at the GwyddonLe this year, including exciting experiments with nitrogen, animation sessions with Dinamo, a chance to control computerized robots, weather presenting challenges and an opportunity to learn about various animals!
Wyn Davies said: ‘‘The Urdd Eisteddfod and science have played an important part in my life, both personally and professionally so it was a pleasure to be involved with the opening of the GwyddonLe this year.’’
Professor Iwan Davies, Swansea University’s Pro–Vice-Chancellor concluded: ‘‘We are delighted to be associated with the GwyddonLe yet again this year and are grateful to Wyn Davies for leading the official opening.
As the first phase of Swansea University’s new Science and Innovation Campus is underway, the GwyddonLe will give us an opportunity to inspire visitors to take an interest in science and continue with their studies at the University one day.
I would like to wish the Urdd Eisteddfod every success and I hope everyone visits the GwyddonLe pavilion and are excited by what’s on offer.’’
