What do you call 50 employers in a tent? A great opportunity for Swansea students!

It’s not every day that the army rubs shoulders with accountants, or that you can chat to engineers one minute and civil servants the next. But that’s what Swansea University students found at their recent Careers Fair, which brought together around 50 major employers in a giant marquee on the campus.

This year’s fair was the biggest and busiest yet, with over 1600 attending in just 5 hours. One lucky student, Yue Dai, studying maritime law, won a unibus season ticket donated by First Cymru.

Pauline McDonald, head of careers and employability at Swansea University, said:

“The careers fair is a great chance for students to chat to lots of employers all in one place.  We had organisations from retail, banking, entrepreneurship, volunteering,  government and many more.

"Finding out about all the opportunities available – in the UK and overseas - is really important.  Plus we were able to offer practical tips like help with CVs

“It’s all part of our effort to improve our students’ employability, and give them as much support as possible, especially in these tough times.”

Before the fair, Pauline and team had given students some top tips on getting the most out of that all-important first meeting with potential employers.

  • Research the employers you wish to speak with and think about the questions you would like to ask them.
  • Update your CV.
  • Be open-minded – you will meet employers whom you may never have considered.  Do not assume that employers will look for graduates with specific degrees.  Many employers consider graduates from any discipline as they are interested in the wide range of skills you have gained during your time at University.
  • Find out what employers look for in applicants.
  • Ask the employers about their work experience, placements/internships.
