Schoolgirls from Swansea and Neath have been getting hands-on in Science and Engineering at Swansea University by participating in this year’s final Discover! Saturday STEM club.

Discover club The year 9 girls, from Bishopston Comprehensive School, Cwrt Sart Community Comprehensive School, Dwr Y Felin Comprehensive School , Ysgol Gyfun Gwyr, Morriston Comprehensive School and Olchfa Comprehensive School, worked in teams in a Civil Engineering themed activity to construct inflatable emergency medical shelters.

The session, led by Dr Clare Wood, lecturer in Civil Engineering at Swansea University, encouraged the girls to consider the impact that civil engineering can have in emergency situations such as floods, earthquakes or droughts, and to consider themselves as potential “Engineers without Borders”.

Dr Wood said: “The Discover! Club  is a fantastic way for Year 9 girls to come in to the University and try a huge range of different science and engineering disciplines, including glaciology, rocket building, computer games programming, forensic DNA analysis and CSI Swansea to name but a few! It really gives the girls the perspective they need to make informed A Level subject choices for their future careers”.

The Swansea University Discover! Saturday STEM club is now in its’ fourth year and is run in collaboration with Careers Wales West. For more information contact Del Thomas at del.thomas@cwwest.co.uk
