Course Overview

Our MSc Advanced Computer Science with Industry is only open to International students. There is a selection process for this course - see the 'how to apply' section on this page.

Gain two years' experience in the UK and the opportunity to work in collaboration with industry on a real-life challenge. This new MSc is an extension of our MSc Advanced Computer Science and includes a second year allowing you to undertake either an industry placement or an industry-focused project with an industrial partner.

Did you know?

Computer Science at Swansea University is widely acknowledged as a leading UK department, with rankings reflecting teaching and research excellence.

  • 5th for satisfaction with your course by the Guardian University Guide 2021.
  • UK TOP 10 for Graduate Prospects by the Complete University Guide 2021.
  • We are ranked Top 20 in the UK for Research Excellence [Research Excellence Framework 2014-2021].
  • World-ranked [QS World University Rankings].

You will be taught by inspiring computer science experts such as Professor Matt Jones, widely recognised as a leader in the empowerment of rural digital communities in the UK and across the developing world.

Your Advanced Computer Science with Industry Experience

You have the freedom to shape your own first part of study with a series of 15-credit modules, while a 60-credit project module will define the second part.

Over the course of this degree you will be taught by staff from internationally renowned research groups. Their knowledge of constant developments in computer science helps to keep your learning fresh and relevant to the wider industry.

Our commitment to keeping up with the technological curve is also reflected in the hardware you will be working with every day.

Our laboratories are continually upgraded to ensure equipment is never more than three years old, and rarely more than two. Currently in use are three fully networked laboratories. One runs Windows, another runs Linux, and a third project laboratory contains specialised equipment.

These laboratories support software including the programming languages Java, C# and the .net framework, C, C++, Haskell and Prolog. Integrated programme development environments include Visual Studio and Netbeans - the widely-used Microsoft Office package, web access tools and many special purpose software tools.

Programme Specification

Important information about your year in industry placement

  1. You must obtain an average of 60% in your first year with no resit exams to progress to the second year of the MSc in Advanced Computer Science with Industry.
  2. You must also secure EITHER an external industry placement OR an internal project with an industry partner to progress to the second year of the MSc in Advanced Computer Science with Industry.

If you do not meet both BOTH conditions 1 and 2 above, you will be transferred to the one-year MSc in Advanced Computer Science (i.e. with no industry option).

  • You will be given placement preparation support, to give you the best possible chance of securing a competitive external industry placement. However, external companies are solely responsible for choosing students to take up placements with them and the University cannot guarantee you will secure one.
  • If you are unable to secure an external placement, the Computer Science department will work with industrial partners to secure you a placement within the University, working collaboratively on a project. While we expect to be able to secure an internal industry project for the vast majority of students who do not secure an external placement, we cannot guarantee that we will be able to do so for all students.
  • Industry partners for internal projects will have specific interests and areas of expertise - it is important to understand that to work with them, you will need to work on projects in those areas of interest and expertise. You will not be able to decide on your own project.
  • While external industry placements are paid positions, internal projects with industrial partners are not.

Entry Requirements

A 2:1 honours degree (or above) in Computer Science or other relevant discipline.

IELTS 6.0 (with a minimum of 5.5 in each component) or equivalent English test.

Please note that there are a limited number of places on this programme – please see ‘How to apply’ for further information regarding requirements.
