Structural Engineering with Industry, MSc

Our Structural Engineering programme will be delivered in three semesters:

• Semester 1 (October-January) includes 60 credits of taught modules
• Semester 2 (February-June) includes 60 credits of taught modules
• Semester 3 (June-September) includes 60 credit research project

Taught modules will include some continuous assessment, completed during the Semester, but the use of end-of semester examinations will remain the most important assessment method for the detailed technical content.

This course is only available for international students.

Usually the entry requirements for the MSc Structural Engineering with Industry course is a 2:2 honours degree (or above) in Civil Engineering or a similar relevant engineering or science discipline. Please note that there are a limited number of places on this programme – please see ‘How to apply’ for further information regarding requirements.

If English is not your first language you will need an acceptable pass in an approved English Language qualification to make sure you get the full benefit from studying at Swansea. We consider a wide range of qualifications, including the Swansea University English Test, the British Council IELTS test (with a score of at least 6.5 and 5.5 in each component). Our department uses a variety of teaching methods including; taught/lecture-based, small group work, laboratory-based, project/assignment-based, use of Blackboard. Increasingly lectures are exploring the use of lecture recording, blended learning and flipped learning.

Some provision

There are opportunities for Welsh speakers to study some elements of this postgraduate course through the medium of Welsh but there is not yet enough provision to reach 40 credits in each year. The Programme Director can outline to you what is available in Welsh.

The part-time option for this course will not be able to be studied alongside full-time employment.

This course includes 32 weeks of industrial experience module (EG-M39). In most cases this will be a mixture of a placement at the university and some time within a paid industrial placement. All students placed in industry will be under close guidance of academic staff at Swansea.

It is the responsibility of the student to secure a suitable placement with the assistance of University staff. Unfortunately your placement is not guaranteed. Where possible, placements will be secured in advance of recruitment, the remaining placement projects will need to be secured by students with support of university staff and this process will take place during October – June of the first year.

The second year course fees are £3,120.
