Charlie James

Charlie James 300Charlie James joined Swansea University as a student, studying for a  Welsh degree (BA Hons). During her degree, Charlie was an active member of a number of student societies, and was the Secretary of the Raise and Give (charity society), and director of a play (Teechers by John Godber) in Shoreline Theatre (drama society). It was as part of Shoreline Theatre that Charlie met her partner, Ross. Charlie also took on the role of Welsh Affairs Officer in the Students’ Union, which was a part-time volunteer role that was elected by her peers. 

Charlie started her working life whilst studying, where she worked as a part-time Catering Assistant for Campus Catering, mainly based in the bar at the Taliesin Theatre.

After graduating, Charlie started as a Clerical Assistant in the Equal Opportunities team at the University and also took a number of consecutive part-time posts, including various Clerical roles in in the Human Resources department and the College of Human and Health Sciences. The role of Equal Opportunities Assistant was renewed and Charlie was successful in being regraded as the role had grown significantly since it was originally advertised. 

Following the success of the University Athena SWAN Bronze re-submission, the University advertised for an Athena SWAN Officer to assist in the delivery of the University action plan, work towards the University Silver and to support each of the Colleges with their individual submissions. Charlie was successful in applying for this role in December 2013. Charlie passionately believes in equality and the importance of utilising all of our talent.

Charlie now co-ordinates Athena SWAN across the University, is an integral part of the University Self-Assessment team and provides advice and guidance to the four STEMM College Teams involved in Athena SWAN and the College of Arts and Humanities in preparation for the new Athena SWAN charter. 

Charlie is always keen to develop herself personally and professionally. Charlie regularly participates in development opportunities, was one of the University's participants in The Leadership Foundation's Aurora pilot course in 2014 and was a participant in the Women in Universities Mentoring Scheme 2014, which is a pan-Wales mentoring scheme.  

Charlie is also a keen runner and has been an active member of the 3Ms Gorseinon Running Club, since April 2014. Charlie was honoured to win the Best Female Newcomer award in the club in 2014.
