The Mullany Fund

The Mullany Fund | Mentoring Project for STEM Subjects

The Mullany Fund is an independent social mobility charity, with a base at the university. They run an online mentoring scheme. Using volunteer mentors, they link a young person to someone studying or working in an area they might be interested in working in. The mentor provides age appropriate advice and personal insights via a secure bilingual e-Mentoring platform.

Any young person who is interested in registering can join here.

Teddy Bear Hospital

Teddy Bear Hospital

Visiting hospitals or the doctor’s surgery can be very worrying for young children, the Teddy Bear Hospital tries to provide a fun, friendly and relaxed platform for children to experience these settings. It is a voluntary project run by university students.

The aims are:

  • To enable university students to develop their interactive skills with young children
  • To educate children of the local community about medicine, healthy living, basic self-care and wellbeing.
  • To reduce the fear and stigmatisation associated with healthcare environments and allow children to become comfortable in these areas.

Reaching Wider

We are passionate about making medicine, science and healthcare careers accessible to young people from all walks of life.

We aim to expand opportunities for young people from a wide range of backgrounds to benefit from higher education through well designed and co-ordinated activities and programmes that increase and support progression to higher education.

We also work closely with the South West Wales Reaching Wider Partnership to provide aspiration raising opportunities for school pupils from deprived areas in the region.

Exploring Global Problems

Exploring Global Problems is our podcast series, where academics from across the University talk about how their ground-breaking research help tackle a variety of global challenges.

The first series topics include Health Innovation, Climate Change, Green Energy and Human-centred digital technologies. Our contribution to this came from Dr Amira Guirguis whose research has explored the challenges of Novel Psychoactive Substances and how we detect them, our second episode came from Professor Paul Dyson who spoke about his work manipulating the genes of bacteria in order to potentially cure cancer.

Visit our podcast page to listen and subscribe to the series. We hope you enjoy!
