Famelab 2017The judges and host for the Swansea heat of FameLab 2017 at the National Waterfront Museum have been announced.

Famelab is the UK’s biggest competition to discover new talent in communicating science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM).  Anyone working in a STEM field who thinks they can explain an idea or concept to non-scientists in just three minutes is welcome to take part.

Contestants should be aged 21 or over, and studying or working in science, technology, engineering or mathematics, which includes specialist science or maths teachers.  Entrants should register directly with FameLab UK and prepare a three minute presentation. Competitors can simply turn up on the day of the heat to take part, but there will be an optional but highly recommended training session beforehand.

The winner of the Swansea heat will battle for a place in the Regional Finals and if successful, all regional finalists will move on to participate in a Masterclass before competing in the UK National Final.  The national winner will then go up against more than 25 other international finalists to win the title of FameLab International Champion at The Times Cheltenham Science Festival.

Winner of last year’s Swansea and Wales heats, Swansea University Psychology PhD student Amy Jenkins, said:  “Competing in FameLab was a fantastic experience! It helped me develop my ability to communicate my research in a clear, concise and entertaining way. I was very nervous at each stage but that is to be expected and it certainly does get easier, especially so with the support of the FameLab organising team.

“The best bit about competing last year was having the opportunity to represent the region at the UK finals in London.  Also, I learnt so much at the fully funded master class weekend in preparation for the UK finals. I would encourage anyone to enter FameLab, the experience I gained is invaluable!”
